The sun dipped behind the rows of sleepy houses as lily sat on the edge of her bed, legs tucked beneath her , staring blankly at the wall. Her room was cloaked in a blue dimness, the kind that felt like a soft blanket but weighed like a thousand secrets. She had spoken to her truth, raw and trembling, and now she was Left in the hollow echo of her own confession.
It had been three days. Three days since she had looked ava in the eyes and told her the truth - that she liked her, maybe more than liked her. The silence that followed was not cruel, not sharp. It was More of a soft pause, like the world had stopped breathing to listen, unsure of what would come next.
Ava hadn't said anything. Not the next day. Not the next day. They still exchanged shy glances in the hallways, still sat next to each other in literature, still shared those strange, loaded silences that said everything and nothing at once.
Lily felt herself unraveling.
That evening, her phone buzzed on the night stand. She grabbed it like a lifeline.
Ava:"Are you free?"
Lily stared. Her heart skipped a bit. Her fingers trembled as she typed back.
Lily: "Yeah. want to come over ?"
ava:"Outside. Walk ?"
Lily threw on a hoodie, not bothering with makeup. Her eyes were tired, but they burned with something fierce - a hope, or maybe just desperation.
Outside, the streets were quiet, lit only with Amber streetlights and the sound of distant crickets. Ava was there, leaning against the fence in her oversized jacket, looking like every sad song lily had ever loved.
They walked in silence first. Lily didn't push. Ava's hand brushed against hers once, and neither of them pulled away.
"I've been thinking, Ava said finally, voice low, unsure.
lily kept her eyes on the sidewalk. "okay."
" I didn't say anything that day ," Ava went on, " Because I didn't know what to say. You caught me off guard. Not in a bad way...... just -"
"You don't owe me anything," Lily interrupted, Her voice soft. "I just..... needed you to know."
" I do owe you something," Ava said, stopping. Lily turned to her. Ava looked up at her with watery eyes and added," I owe you honesty."
The silence stretched between them like a fragile bridge.
"I like you too," Ava whispered. "I've liked you for a long time, but I thought it would ruin everything. You were one good thing I had that didn't feel like it would slip away."
lily's breath caught.
"I didn't want to mess it up," Ava added. " But when you told me, I....... I started to hope."
Neither of them moved. Then Lily stepped forward, heart hammering in her chest. She gently reached for Ava's hand.
" You didn't mess anything up."
They stood under the streetlight, fingers intertwined, shadows stretching long and soft on the pavement.
"I'm scared," Ava admitted.
"Mee too," Lily said. " But I'm here."
And that was enough.
They walked a little more, no more words needed now. Just the comfort of hands held and hearts finally aligned.
Back in her room that night, Lily lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling, a small smile curling her lips. The aches didn't vanish entirely, but it changed. Became something warmer. something Worth waiting for.
Tomorrow would be uncertain. The world wouldn't suddenly make sense. But Lily knew one thing for sure now: She wasn't alone in her feelings.
And that changed everything.
lily stared at her ceiling in the dim glow of her fairy lights, her blanket pulled up to her chest, Ava's voice still echoing in her ears.
" I like you too."
Three simple words.
But to lily, they cracked something wide open - something soft and hidden she'd been carrying alone for too long.
For three days, she'd been walking through the motion of school, wondering, hoping, doubting. She'd barely slept, her thoughts circling like moths around the flame of that moment. Now, everything felt still. Not calm - but suspended. Like the world had exhaled.
She rolled over and reached for her phone. A new message waited.
Ava: can't sleep. You ruined me,L."
Lily smiled to herself.
Lily: " Good. You deserved it after making me wait for three days."
Ava: " I was scared. Not of you. Of losing you."
Lily: " You could never lose me. Not now."
There was a pause. The typing bubble blinked and vanished, then returned.
Ava: " So....... what are we now?"
Lily stared at the question. Her heart picked up. It was so them- gentle, hesitant, unfinished.
lily: " we're figuring it out. But I think we are something beautiful. "
No reply came immediately, but Lily didn't mind. The silence was comforting. She closed her eyes and imagined ava smiling softly in her own bed, reading her words under the same moon.
Down the hall, muffled voices echoed - her mom on the phone again , probably with her sister. It was a world away from the one lily now lived in - a quiet, scared space where ava existed with her.
The next day at school, nothing had changed on the surface.
They didn't hol hands. They didn't kiss behind lockers.
But there glances were longer. Their smiles were secrets.
During lunch, Ava let her knee rest slightly against lily's under the table. Neither moved. The contact was electric.
Later, in the hallway as their friends walked ahead, Ava slipped lily a folded note. It was old-fashioned , ridiculous - and made lily's heart race.
She waited until class to open it.
Inside, Ava had drawn a small pink heart and scribled.
"Still scared. But also , for the first time , excited. Don't let go."
Lily traced the heart with her fingertip.
she wouldn't.
Lily folded the note back into her palm like it was something sacred.
Still scared. But also, for the first time, excited.
She kept reading those words through the rest of the lesson, barely hearing the teachers voice or the scratching pens around her. The Air felt thick with meaning. Every glance Ava gave her a cross the room carried weight - soft, yet heavy with everything unsaid.
When the final bell rang, lily moved slower than usual, waiting just outside the classroom door. she didn't want to rush this - whatever this was becoming. Ava came out moments later, brushing hair from her face like she always did when she was nervous.
"I'll walk you home ?" Ava asked, her voice low.
"Yeah ," lily said, trying to hide her smile.
They didn't talk much on the way back, but their steps matched. There hands kept brushing like something unspoken was pulling them together. Just before they reached lily's street, Ava stopped walking.
Lily turned to her. "what?"
Ava looked at her for a long second. " I want to do this right. I am not good at saying stuff out loud but - can I try something ?"
lily nodded, heart racing.
Ava stepped closer. And with a quiet breath, she reached out and linked her Pinky with lily's.
It wasn't a kiss.
It wasn't dramatic.
But it felt like everything.
Lily stared at their fingers. "That's the cutest thing anyone's ever done to me."
Ava blushed and looked away. " I've been thinking about it for days. My heart's been annoying me."
Lily laughed gently. "Mine too."
They didn't say goodbye with words. Ava just gave her that soft look she'd given her once before in the art room - like she saw lily for exactly who she was. like she didn't want to look away.
That night, Lily sat by her bedroom window, watching the wind tug at the curtains. The Pinky touch still tingle in her hand. She wasn't sure what tomorrow would look like - but for the first time in ages, she didn't feel so alone.
She scribbled in her journal, something she hadn't done In weeks.
Dear diary,
I think I'm in love.
Not the movie kind. The real kind. The quiet kind that grows in between lockers and the late night texts and shared glances.
It's scary. But it feels like home.
Down stairs, her mom knocked on the door. "Dinner."
Lily wiped her tears she didn't realize had fallen. "coming."
She slipped Ava's note under the pillow, like a promise.
The next morning, the world felt different. She wore her favorite sweater. Tied her hair the way Ava once said she liked. At school, she found ava already waiting at their usual bench , two steaming cups in her hands.
"Tea," Ava said simply. "It's cold."
Lily sat beside her. Their shoulders brushed.
"I want to kiss you someday ", Ava whispered, not looking at her. " Not now. But when it feels right ."
Lily nodded,"I'll wait."
Ava's smile was soft, almost bashful.
"You always say the perfect thing."
" No,'" lily said. "You just hear it perfectly."
