I begged Edward to take Willa’s pearls out of the house. I could no longer live with them and I imagine he felt much the same. The ground was frozen beneath the snow, but he managed to dig just deep enough to prevent us from finding them again after the thaw. So the house would quiver and groan, breathing in that heavy way which only serves to command one’s attention. She was like a spoiled teenager then. There were times when the rooms would be sick and angry, and winds would tear through the halls, tossing the mirrors and artefacts to the floor in a fit. The wires would strain and the pipes would creak, crying out through the taps and shorting the lamps. The snowstorms were relentless, though I imagine that was only coincidence.
