Across A Bottomless Abyss

Chapter 8

I was already 20 meters away from the boundary when I saw a glint of light from afar. I even accelerated my movement. Soon my rifle was slowly disappearing. Oh gosh, I'm not at my normal power level right now. What is the use of my 6th sense? It would be nice if I could see in the dark.

When I reached the spot, the light suddenly disappeared. My brows furrowed because of that. Who made the light? I was about to move again when I heard some footsteps.

Suddenly I heard a crack again so I followed it. Using my 6th sense, I can feel that there's someone here. He/she is feeling anxious. I didn't realize that I was inside the old building.

I even heard some noise at the top so I climbed carefully. My cloak suddenly clung to the protruding tree.

"Mess," I whispered.

When I got to the second floor I saw a figure of two people. I frowned because the back of the person behind me was familiar.

I cautiously approached their place. I love to collect weapons so I make boots that can hide it in case. I just wish I had something with me.

I was shocked when the man strangled the woman in front of him. All this time, I thought they're on the same team!

When the woman's face turned to me, I was startled.

"Hailey," I whispered her name.

It was as if she heard that because she was looking in my direction. Her eyes scream for help. I blinked twice to absorb what's happening.

I found a shuriken on the side of my boots. It's as if the skies answered my prayers. I quickly came out of my hiding place and threw the shuriken at the foot of the man strangling Hailey.

The man fell down because of the sharp point of what I threw at him. I used that opportunity so that he could no longer escape. I quickly kicked him in the stomach over and over. I knew he was writhing in pain because his body was already flexing. He's wearing the same cloak with us.

There was a small rope hanging around Myka's waist so I took that and made a binding to the man.

"Who are you?" I asked him.

"Lieutenant," was his faint answer.

My eyes widened when I recognized his voice. He was the one who reported to me earlier. Why is he here? how was he able to betray us?

"How dare you," I coldly told him.

"I'm not the opponent, Lieutenant," he said softly while looking around at Hailey's seat.

"I'm scared," Hailey suddenly said from behind.

"You're now safe, Hailey. I'm here," I told her.

I took off the mask he was wearing. I was not mistaken. He was actually the one who reported to me earlier.

I searched for his name on the cloak he was wearing. Enough of my suspicion. He was the one I was chasing earlier. I can feel the fear in his whole being. He's from Class A just like me.

"Who is leading you?" I asked him seriously.

"Lieutenant, have mercy. I'm not the protagonist here. I'm telling the truth," he replied tremblingly.

"I saw you. Don't be silly. You're strangling the sister of one of the Lieutenants. Do you know what sin you committed? Now, tell me the truth," I angrily asked him again.

He shook quickly and tried to move his hands as if someone wanted to point at me. My brows furrowed while trying to anticipate his next move. I was about to ask him again when Hailey interrupted.

"Just kill him," she said seriously.

"Lieutenant, don't believe her. She's a traitor," the man shouted while trembling looking in Hailey's direction

"You're a piece of s**t," Hailey sternly said.

Why is she like this now? It was like I saw someone else. Hailey is not like that.

"Stop it!" I shouted

She turned to me and let go of the man in surprise.

"You're supposed to kill him. You clearly saw how he strangled me. He's the mastermind," she coldly said.

"I have many things to ask. Just shut up," Itold her.

I can sense something. Why is she confused? This man can't get away.

"Remember Lieutenant. Rules are rules and being one of those higher officials, I believe that you're aware of what I'm talking about," she added.

"I know," I said.

I looked back at the man. I can't sense any danger from him. I tried to look back and see Hailey's eyes. I don't want to be suspicious but she's showing something different now.

"Kill him," I told her and stood up.

She looked at me with wide eyes. I raised a brow and looked at her seriously. Now, I don't care if you're Matthew's sister. I will dig deeper and find your deepest secrets.

"Rule number 1, don't ever try to deceive anyone," I said.

"What?" she asked me.

"I thought he's the culprit? Kill him," I told her.

"You must be the one to do it!" she hissed.

I did not know that she's transparent. Well I guess her physical appearance does not define her personality. She's just one of those plastic Class B people who are using their family's background to gain a prosperous life.

"Rule number 2. Those who chose to deceive the city deserve death," I said as I looked directly in her eyes.

She looked at me and grinned widely. I can sense triumph and happiness. Now I wonder why I even trust these kinds of people. She pulled out the small knife hidden in the side of her belt.

I calculated things and realized that she's the real culprit. She's not wearing her cloak and by doing that, she's now disobeying one of the dress codes.

Before she could stab the man, I blocked and slapped her hard.

"You can deceive everyone but not me," I coldly told her.

Now, her true identity has emerged. I'm a fool for trusting her. She's a piece of nonsense traitor.

"I will never be your Lieutenant just for nothing," I told her.

She was about to start but a man pulled her hair.

"Hi there, my dearest Lieutenant," he grinned.

"I'm not happy to see you, Captain," I said and rolled my eyes.

I heard him chuckle. I turned around and assisted the movement analyst of Team Bravo. I also removed the rope that bound him.

"I'm sorry. Is it painful?" I asked him.

"I almost died, Lieutenant," he said and smiled.

I just laughed softly because of what he said. I saw that one of his legs was bleeding, maybe because of my shuriken earlier.

I tore the bottom part of my fitted top and tied it to his wound. I helped him stand up and pulled him over to me.

Before I could look at Xipher's place again, I heard gunshots. My heart almost pounded when I realized that it's the sound of his pistol. It's literally a bullet because we can't use any elemental abilities here.

"Captain's brutal too," whispered by the man next to me.

"He's the Captain. He needs to be merciless," I answered.

By the help of the illuminating moon, I saw Hailey's body lying on the cold floor.

"I'm giving you a warning, Lieutenant. Don't ever come near the Gastrolenon," he sternly said.

"Do you have to say that?" I asked him.

"He's also under investigation now," he said and raised a brow.

He returned the pistol behind him while just looking straight into my eyes. I rolled my eyes and continued walking.

"Captain is jealous."

"Do you want me to break your bones more?" I asked him.

"No, Lieutenant. Be quiet" he told me.

"Hey! I'll take that man!" Xipher shouted.

"I can do that," I fired back.

"No," he said.

He quickly pulled the man so he shouted because of pain.

"You're hurting him!" I hissed.

"And you're hurting my feelings too, Amalia," he said.

He quickly pulled the man away and left me staring at him like a fool.

What the Hell is wrong with this planet ?

I just followed them when I was a little confused. When we arrived in the city itself, everything was fine. There seems to be no fire before. The laboratory building is now back to normal.

"How could you kill my sister, Astronoum!" Matthew welcomed us with so much rage in his eyes.

When he looked at me, I shrugged. I know it hurts on his part because his sister is the one in question here. Rules are rules.

"And how dare you call me using my last name, Gastrolenon?" Xipher fired back.

Some healers approached us and took the movement analyst who had been purged and guided by Xipher.

"Well, I'm kidding. Congratulations for finding the Culprit," Matthew sarcastically said.

"Let me ask you, Lieutenant. Why are you killing?" Xipher seriously asked him.

"I kill people to survive," Matthew answered with so much regret and pain.

I was also hurt because of him. He already knew that being a member of this team is very crucial. We can't bring personal issues to work and the only thing that makes us alive is by killing the traitors.

"Well, I'm sorry Lieutenant Gastrolenon. I'm still your Captain and I don't do killings just to survive," he paused for awhile and looked at me deeply.

"I kill because there are people whom I wanted to protect," Xipher said before he left.
