“It’s good to see you awake, Luna,” he said gently with a calm smile, stopping beside Logan, who immediately shifted aside to give him space. “I’m Doctor Davies, but you can call me Luke.”
I frowned the second he said “Luna.” That word hit something in my memory I didn’t like. I remembered someone else using it before, like it meant something I was supposed to understand but didn’t. I wasn’t a “Luna.” I didn’t even know what that was supposed to mean, and honestly it just made me feel more confused. I didn’t want any nickname or label I didn’t understand. Most of the names people used around me didn’t feel familiar anyway, like I was constantly being called things I couldn’t properly place, and it left me feeling even more lost.
I just gave a small nod back, knowing there was no point trying to speak. I had already stopped a while ago, mostly because nothing was coming out anyway, and honestly Logan standing right over me wasn’t helping. He was leaned in way too close, hovering at the head of the bed like personal space didn’t exist, his breath brushing my face and pushing loose strands of hair everywhere. I awkwardly brushed it back behind my ear with a slightly shaking hand before looking over at the doctor in the white coat.
“It looks like your heart rate is steady, breathing is normal, airways are clear, and the IV is doing its job getting fluids and nutrients into your system. Everything seems stable,” he said, giving a small reassuring smile while jotting notes down on his clipboard like this was just another normal day for him.
“Um, doctor,” my mom spoke up, clearing her throat as she moved around the bed to take my hand again, “she can’t talk.”
The doctor paused immediately, his white eyebrows pulling together as he glanced back at his notes like he was double-checking something he already suspected. “I was worried this might happen.”
“You mean you knew this could happen and didn’t say anything?” Logan snapped, his voice sharp enough that it filled the whole room. I watched his hands curl into fists at the edge of the bed, his frustration obvious. Even I flinched a little, and I wasn’t even the one being yelled at. The doctor visibly tensed, leaning back slightly like he was trying to create distance.
“I apologize, Alpha,” he said quickly, voice steady but careful. “I had a suspicion, but I didn’t want to stress anyone out in case she woke up and could still speak. I should have handled that better. I truly didn’t mean to hide anything—I just didn’t want to cause unnecessary panic.”
Luke looked uneasy as he spoke, shoulders slightly lowered while Logan stood there breathing hard for a moment. Then, after a beat, Logan gave a short nod, like he was accepting the explanation even if he wasn’t fully satisfied with it.
I didn’t really like the way they were talking about me like I wasn’t even in the room, but at the same time… I guess I preferred it when I was just ignored. Being the center of attention always made my stomach twist, like everyone’s eyes were suddenly too loud. Logan, though, wasn’t helping at all—he kept pressing Doctor Luke like he wanted answers immediately, while the doctor flipped back through his notes, pen pressed against his lips as he thought hard.
“If I may, Alpha,” Doctor Luke said carefully, “I’d like to examine the Luna’s throat… which would require me to touch her.”
I frowned at that instantly. It didn’t sit right with me how he was asking permission like I didn’t even get a say in my own body. Logan wasn’t my owner. He wasn’t anything to me. Just… a stranger who acted like he had authority he didn’t earn. I wasn’t something that belonged to anyone.
“You may,” Logan said flatly, giving permission like it was his call to make.
Doctor Luke gave a small nod, setting his clipboard down on the edge of the bed near my leg before stepping closer. He stopped right in front of me, professional but careful, like he was trying not to scare me.
“I’m going to touch your throat now,” he explained gently. “If anything hurts, I need you to pull away immediately, alright?”
I just nodded slightly.
His fingertips were cold when they touched my neck, moving slowly as he checked different areas like he was trying to map out what was wrong. Most of it felt uncomfortable but manageable… until suddenly it wasn’t. A sharp wave of pain shot through my throat when he pressed near the front and slightly under my jaw. I jerked back instantly, pulling away fast with a sharp breath.
Logan let out this low growl the second he saw me react, and I could feel his anger even without looking at him. The doctor tensed for a second, clearly trying to stay focused despite the pressure in the room.
“Hm,” Doctor Luke murmured, like he was already piecing something together. Then he looked at me again. “Can you open your mouth for me as wide as you can?”
I didn’t like the way they were talking about me like I wasn’t even in the room, but honestly… I also didn’t really mind being ignored. Being the center of attention always made my skin crawl, like everyone was staring a little too hard and I didn’t know where to look or how to act.
Logan was still hovering near me, and I could feel the pressure in the room shifting because of him. Doctor Luke kept flipping through his notes again and again, the pen tapping lightly against his lips like he was trying to figure something out that didn’t fully make sense yet.
“If I may, Alpha… I’d like to examine the Luna’s throat, and that would require physical contact,” Doctor Luke said carefully.
I frowned immediately at that. The way he had to ask permission to touch me didn’t sit right with me at all. Like I was some kind of object that needed approval from Logan first. Newsflash—I wasn’t his to give permission for. I wasn’t anyone’s possession.
“You may,” Logan answered flatly.
Doctor Luke gave a quick nod, placing his clipboard down on the edge of the bed near my leg before stepping closer. He stopped right in front of me, calm but focused.
“I’m going to examine your throat now. If anything hurts, pull away immediately, okay?” he said gently.
I gave a small nod.
