1243 Words
______ The moon climbed higher, spilling its glow across the trees, and in that pale light Khalid kissed her—desperate, aching, a promise and a farewell hidden in the same breath. His hand trembled against her cheek, as if he already feared the day he might never touch her again. But far beyond the quiet clearing, they were not alone. Among the thickets, several pairs of eyes gleamed—watching, listening. The pack had been trailing him, silent as shadows, for they had grown restless with his unexplained absences. Tonight, they had followed the scent, and now the truth lay before them: their alpha-to-be, entwined with a human? hmmmmmm One of them, a dark figure with amber eyes, bared his teeth in a snarl. He turned and melted back into the night, carrying the secret with him. By dawn, Khalid’s betrayal would no longer be hidden. A chill passed through Khalid’s spine. He felt the air shift, his instincts tightening like a warning drum. He pulled back from Amina, scanning the forest edge with sharp eyes. because he already knew what was coming, but the sweetness of Amina's love has mixed with the panic of the aftermath of breaking the oath “What is it?” she asked softly, her hand still caught in his. He forced a smile, though his voice betrayed him. “Nothing. Just the night… it listens more than it should.” But Amina wasn’t fooled. She laid her palm against his chest, feeling the thunder of his heartbeat. “You’re afraid,” she whispered. “Yes,” he admitted at last. “Not for me. For you.” Silence stretched between them, broken only by the rustle of leaves and the whisper of the wind. Amina leaned into him, resting her head against his shoulder. “Then let me carry that fear with you. Don’t shut me out, Khalid. Whatever storm comes, I will not run.” she kept repeating that statement over and over again, was it a joke NO!!!! she meant it love is inevitable. Her words pierced him deeper than claws ever could. He knew what loyalty meant to his kind—knew the punishment for betrayal. Yet here she was, fragile and human, choosing chains she could not see. He wanted to protect her, to take her far away, but the forest had already claimed her fate the moment their souls had entwined beneath the moon. “I will find a way,” he said, his voice hoarse with unspoken vows. “Even if it means defying them all.” She lifted her face to his, her eyes shimmering with trust. “Then we fight together.” Khalid pressed his forehead to hers, closing his eyes. In that fragile moment, he almost believed it possible—that love could silence the howl of the pack, that destiny could be rewritten by two hearts bound in defiance. yes! it could, but their own destiny is the other way But the night was not merciful. Somewhere in the distance, a wolf howled—low, mournful, yet edged with fury. The call rippled through the trees, answered by others, until the forest itself seemed to echo with rage. Khalid’s blood ran cold. The pack had spoken. Amina’s breath caught at the sound. She clutched his arm. “Khalid… what was that?” He pulled her close, shielding her with his body. His eyes, glowing faintly in the moonlight, held both tenderness and dread. “It means time is running out.” And though she is yet to understand, Amina knew her love had set something in motion that could never be undone --- The howls did not fade with the night; they grew, weaving into one another until the forest pulsed with an ancient rhythm that made the ground tremble. Amina clung to Khalid, her heart clashing against his chest as though it could match the wolves’ cries. “Khalid,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “They know.” He swallowed hard, his jaw tightening. “Yes. And they’re coming.” From the shadows of the trees, shapes emerged—dark, hulking figures, half-man, half-beast, their glowing eyes fixed on him. The pack moved as one, fanning out in a circle, their snarls rising like a storm. Amina’s knees weakened, but Khalid steadied her, stepping forward to shield her from their gaze. His body tensed, his wolf close to the surface, begging to be released. Yet he knew transformation here would only confirm what they feared most—that he had chosen a human above his blood, above his pack. The leader stepped into the clearing. It was idris, broad-shouldered, his fur silvered by age and dominance. His voice was low and cold. “Khalid. You shame us.” “I shame nothing,” Khalid answered, though his voice cracked with the weight of the moment. “I have chosen love, not betrayal.” Idris lip curled into a snarl. “Love?” His gaze slid to Amina, who stood trembling yet unyielding, clutching Khalid’s arm. “She is prey. Nothing more. And you would stain our lineage for her?” Khalid’s chest heaved. “She is mine.” The clearing went silent. The words were an oath, unshakable and final. The pack shifted uneasily, snarls caught in their throats. To claim a human was not just rebellion—it was sacrilege. Amina, though fear threatened to break her, lifted her chin. “I chose him too.” The pack roared in outrage, their growls shaking the leaves from the trees. Rashid’s eyes blazed. “Then you both will suffer the price of this madness.” Khalid shoved Amina behind him, his own body trembling as bones threatened to shift, as the beast was clawed for release. His voice thundered: “If you want her, you will go through me!” The first wolf lunged from the shadows, teeth flashing, but Khalid met him with a roar, half-human, half-beast, his claws ripping across fur. Blood sprayed the earth. Amina gasped, clutching her mouth, her eyes wide with horror and awe. The clearing erupted. Wolves surged forward, and Khalid fought like fire unleashed, his strength raw, desperate. But he was the only one against many. For every wolf he struck down, two more closed in, their fangs snapping, their claws raking his flesh. “Amina—run!” he bellowed, his voice strangled with pain. But Amina stood frozen, tears streaking down her face, her heart refusing to abandon him. “No! I won’t leave you!” A wolf broke through the fray, leaping at her with fangs bared. Khalid’s eyes burned with fury, his body twisting mid-battle to intercept. He crashed into the beast, taking the brunt of the strike, his blood staining the ground. Rashid’s voice rose above the chaos, cruel and thunderous. “Enough! This ends tonight.” He moved forward, towering, his claws glinting in the moonlight. Khalid staggered to his feet, broken yet unyielding, his body shielding Amina even as his strength waned. “You will not touch her,” Khalid growled, blood dripping from his lips. Rashid sneered. “You cannot protect what was never meant to be yours.” The pack’s circle tightened. Amina’s scream pierced the night as the moonlight spilled across the battlefield like a cruel witness. And in that moment, as Khalid braced himself for the final blow, tragedy loomed like a blade—sharp, certain, and inevitable. ---
