Chapter 13: A Woman Can Be Won Over "What does Mrs. Anderson want with me?" Ethan's heart sank like a stone. Even so, he answered the call immediately. A cool, composed voice came through the receiver. "Ethan, this is Sophia Anderson. Please come to my office." "Yes, Mrs. Anderson. I'll be right there." Sophia Anderson's office occupied the top floor of the headquarters, even grander than Marcus Anderson's executive suite. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the bustling city skyline. The décor embraced understated luxury—soft gray carpeting, minimalist furnishings, tasteful abstract artwork, and polished green plants that reflected the morning light. Sophia sat behind an expansive ebony desk. She wore a perfectly tailored white business suit, her long hair neatly pinned into an elegant bun that revealed her graceful neck. A hint of her delicate collarbone showed beneath the crisp collar of her jacket. Sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting soft patterns across her shoulders and outlining her figure with a warm golden glow. When she looked up, her phoenix-shaped eyes settled calmly on Ethan. The tiny beauty mark beneath the corner of one eye made her refined features even more striking. "Please, have a seat." Her voice was composed and gentle. Ethan sat stiffly in the leather chair opposite her. His palms were damp with sweat. He kept his hands clasped tightly on his knees, afraid of appearing disrespectful. He could look Olivia in the eyes without difficulty. He could even secretly dream about a future with her. But Sophia Anderson was different. To him, she seemed almost untouchable. Elegant. Dignified. Accomplished. She felt less like an employer's wife and more like royalty. Compared to her, he was nothing more than an ordinary driver earning a modest salary. Even breathing too loudly felt inappropriate. After a moment of silence, Sophia asked softly, "How old are you this year, Ethan?" The unexpected question caught him off guard. "I'm twenty-eight, Mrs. Anderson." She nodded thoughtfully. "So you're actually two years older than I am." A faint smile appeared on her lips. "At your age..." "It's probably time to start thinking about building a family." Ethan's ears instantly turned red. Marriage? He could barely afford rent each month. After sending money home to support his parents, there was almost nothing left. Starting a family had always felt like an impossible luxury. Sophia continued in a warm, sincere tone. "I know you've worked for Marcus for ten years." "You're one of the company's longest-serving employees." "His business has grown rapidly, and most of his attention goes toward the company." "I'm sure he appreciates your work." "But people like him don't always notice the personal sacrifices others make." She paused. "I do." "You've driven for him faithfully for ten years without a single serious accident." "You've been loyal." "You've worked hard." "I've always remembered that." Something tightened painfully in Ethan's chest. For ten long years... No one had ever acknowledged his efforts like this. No one had ever spoken so sincerely about everything he had quietly endured. His eyes stung unexpectedly. "Mrs. Anderson..." "I..." He couldn't finish. Sophia smiled gently before changing the subject. "So..." "Olivia has moved in with you?" "Yes." Ethan answered honestly. She gave a knowing smile. "Then perhaps..." "...you should thank me." He blinked in confusion. "Thank you?" Sophia rested her hands lightly on the desk. "You don't have to pretend with me." "I knew Marcus was hiding in that wardrobe that night." "I deliberately made enough noise so he'd know I wasn't leaving." "I stayed long enough to force your little performance to become convincing." "Yesterday..." "I also made sure Olivia had no choice but to move in with you." Ethan stared at her speechlessly. Sophia continued calmly. "I wasn't doing it to make your life difficult." "I was protecting my marriage." "And perhaps..." "I was giving you an opportunity." She met his gaze directly. "Olivia is intelligent, beautiful, highly educated, and capable." "Under normal circumstances, she never would've considered dating an ordinary driver." "Please don't misunderstand." "I'm not looking down on you." "I actually admire your honesty." "But because of everything that's happened..." "You've been given a chance." Ethan lowered his eyes. "A chance..." "Maybe." "But she still doesn't see me that way." "She never answered me when I tried to find out how she really felt." Those words remained inside his heart. Aloud, he simply said, "Mrs. Anderson..." "We're not pretending anymore." "She's really my girlfriend." Sophia laughed softly. "Oh?" "You're still trying to fool me?" For the first time, Ethan saw a playful side of her. That brief smile made her seem far younger than usual. Even he found himself momentarily distracted by her elegance. She leaned forward slightly. "Ethan." "I genuinely hope you make good use of this opportunity." "Olivia is a good woman." "She may have made mistakes." "But people can change." Her voice remained calm and encouraging. "I know you believe you're not worthy of her." "And perhaps she never imagined someone like you before." "But relationships don't always begin the way people expect." Ethan listened quietly. Her words stirred emotions he had tried to suppress. Sophia continued, "She agreed to move in with you." "That alone says something." "It means she already trusts you more than she realizes." She paused briefly before adding with a faint, knowing smile, "Sometimes people discover their feelings gradually." "They aren't born all at once." "So don't give up on yourself too quickly." Ethan's heart warmed. No one had ever spoken to him like this. For a fleeting moment, he almost believed the impossible might become possible. Then reality quickly returned. He shook his head. "I'm afraid." "If Mr. Anderson finds out anything..." "I'm just a driver." "He's one of the wealthiest businessmen in the city." "If I cross the line..." "I'll lose everything." Sophia studied the fear written plainly across his face. Then she answered with quiet confidence. "Don't worry." "I'll make sure no one harms you." "As long as you conduct yourself honorably..." "...Marcus won't dare lay a finger on you."
