Chapter 10 back into the Ancient Fortress

1038 Words
As the first rays of sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, the group began their arduous journey back to the mysterious ancient fortress. They traveled in silence, each lost in their own thoughts as they made their way through the thick forest. Alistair took the lead, his gaze scanning the landscape for any signs of danger. Beside him, Malakar marched, a look of concentration etched on his face as he thought about the revelation Arvandor had shared the night before. Suddenly, Seraphina broke the silence. I hope this plan works, she said, her voice barely above a whisper. The cult won't be expecting us to come at them from within their own territory. Arvandor nodded, his expression grim. Indeed, but we must remain vigilant. The cult is cunning and ruthless, and they'll stop at nothing to protect their interests. Malakar shot Arvandor a quick glance, his thoughts still on their conversation from the night before. You know their tactics better than any of us, he said. We'll be relying on your expertise to guide us. Alistair turned his head, catching the tail end of the conversation. Yes, Arvandor's insights will be invaluable. But remember, our greatest strength lies in our unity. We must work together if we hope to defeat the cult. Malakar frowned, his thoughts drifting back to the secret he now shared with Arvandor. He wondered how long he could keep such a heavy truth from Alistair, and what the consequences would be when it eventually came to light. Seraphina, ever perceptive, was the first to notice Malakar's somber expression. Malakar, what's wrong? She asked, concern evident in her voice. Why the frown? Alistair, too, turned to look at Malakar, his brow furrowed. Yes, is something bothering you? He asked. You've seemed a bit distracted since we set out this morning. Malakar hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. It's nothing, he said, forcing a small smile. Just lost in thought, that's all. Don't worry about me. Relieved that Malakar hadn't divulged their secret, Arvandor quickly changed the subject. Look, we're almost at the fortress, he said, gesturing towards the massive, imposing structure that loomed in the distance. The group fell silent once more as they took in the sight of the ancient fortress, its towering walls and dark, forbidding appearance sending a chill down their spines. They knew that danger lay ahead, but they were determined to face it together. As they drew closer to the fortress, Seraphina broke the tension with a well-timed quip. This time, let's try not to fall into the fortress, she said with a smirk. Let's go through the front door like civilized folk, shall we? The others couldn't help but chuckle at her remark, the laughter helping to ease their nerves. Good one, Seraphina, Alistair said, grinning. Let's just hope the cult rolls out the welcome mat for us. As the group ventured into the eerily empty fortress, they passed by the lifelike statues that lined the walls. Alistair felt a strange pull, as if he were being drawn towards a specific statue. It was the same one that had caught his eye on their previous visit, and he couldn't shake the feeling that there was something familiar, something important about it. He approached the statue, reaching out to touch its cold, stone surface. For a moment, he felt a flicker of recognition, as if he were on the cusp of uncovering a long-forgotten memory. But before he could explore the sensation further, a sound from deeper within the fortress caught his attention, snapping him back to reality. What was that? Alistair whispered, his body tensing as he strained to listen. His eyes darted around the dimly lit corridor, scanning for any sign of danger. The others looked at him quizzically. What sound? Malakar asked, his hand hovering over the hilt of his sword. I didn't hear anything. Seraphina shook her head in agreement. Me neither. Are you sure you heard something, Alistair? Arvandor frowned, his eyes narrowed as he surveyed his surroundings. It's possible that Alistair's senses are heightened due to our proximity to the cult. We should remain cautious and proceed with care. I'm going to investigate, Alistair announced, his voice low and determined. It could be nothing, but I can't shake the feeling that there's something amiss here. Be careful, Alistair, Seraphina said, her face etched with worry. We don't know what we're up against. Don't worry, I'll be fine, Alistair reassured them, though his own heart was racing. Just stay alert and keep an eye out for any signs of danger. Malakar and Arvandor exchanged a quick glance, then nodded in agreement. We'll have your back, Malakar said. Just give a shout if you need us. With that, Alistair crept away, disappearing into the shadows as he followed the echo of the sound he had heard. As Alistair vanished from sight, Seraphina felt a sudden surge of unease. She hesitated for only a moment before calling out, Alistair, wait! I'm coming with you! Malakar and Arvandor looked at her in surprise, but she ignored them, already sprinting after Alistair. She caught up with him just as he turned a corner, her footsteps echoing through the empty corridor. What are you doing? Alistair hissed, spinning around to face her. It's too dangerous. I know, Seraphina said, her gaze determined. But I'm not going to let you face whatever's out there alone. Despite his misgivings, Alistair found himself grateful for her presence. Together, they pressed on, the sounds of their footsteps drowned out by the thunderous beating of their hearts. As Alistair and Seraphina continued deeper into the fortress, a low, rhythmic drumming sound began to reverberate through the air. Alistair could feel it in his bones, the pulsating rhythm growing louder with each step they took. He turned to Seraphina, his eyes wide. Do you hear that? He whispered urgently. Seraphina paused, her brow furrowed as she strained to listen. No, I don't hear anything, she said after a moment. Are you sure you're not imagining it? Alistair shook his head emphatically. I'm certain. It's a steady drumming sound, like a heartbeat. He glanced around nervously. We're getting closer. Whatever it is, it's not far now.
