Chapter Five: A Break in the Silence

755 Words
The air felt different that morning. As Amara walked through the campus gates, a quiet unease settled over her. Something about Malik’s calm presence, the careful way he spoke, and the attention he gave her had pulled her out of her shell. For the first time in a long while, she felt like she belonged somewhere. But comfort, she was beginning to realize, could be misleading. She approached her locker with a strange sense of expectation, half hoping to find another note or small surprise waiting for her. The thought made her smile despite herself. It felt foolish to look forward to something like that, yet her heart fluttered all the same. Her fingers brushed the cool metal of the locker door. Nothing. No note. No chocolate. Just her reflection staring back from the small mirror inside. Her smile faded. “Expecting something?” She turned to find Malik leaning nearby, arms folded, amusement dancing in his eyes. “Not really,” she said evenly. “You look disappointed.” “I’m not,” she replied, knowing it was not entirely true. He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “You should know something about me, Amara. I like surprises.” She rolled her eyes lightly. “That’s not exactly comforting.” “I’m not trying to comfort you,” he said with a grin. “But I do have plans for lunch.” She raised an eyebrow. “Another mystery?” He only smiled before walking away, leaving her with more questions than answers. By lunchtime, unease settled beneath Amara’s ribs. She had not seen Tasha all morning. Yesterday, Tasha had vanished without explanation, and today she was nowhere to be found. The cafeteria buzzed with noise and movement, but Amara felt detached from it all. Her eyes searched until she spotted Malik near the exit, waiting for her. She made her way toward him, ignoring curious glances along the way. Without a word, he led her through a quiet path toward the edge of campus. “Where are we going?” she asked. “Somewhere quieter,” he replied. They stopped beneath a mango tree near an old bench tucked away from the main walkways. It felt private without being hidden. Malik pulled two sandwiches from his bag and handed one to her. “No complaints,” he said lightly. She accepted it but studied him. “You don’t do this for everyone, do you?” He smiled. “What makes you think that?” “Because people stare,” she said honestly. “Like they’re surprised.” He shrugged. “Let them.” She looked down, fingers tightening around her drink. “I know what people assume about me,” Malik said. “I’ve learned to ignore it. But I care what you think.” That made her look up. His expression was serious now, open yet guarded, as though he was choosing his words carefully. “I don’t know what to think,” she admitted. “Then take your time,” he said. “No pressure.” After lunch, he hesitated before speaking again. “I was thinking maybe we could go somewhere after classes. Somewhere public. Just to clear your head.” She hesitated. “Like where?” “A mall nearby,” he said casually. “Nothing serious.” When the final lecture ended, Amara found herself waiting near the campus gate. Malik arrived on his bike, offering her a spare helmet. “I’ll take it slow,” he promised. She hesitated, then nodded. The ride was brief, the city blurring past until they reached the shopping center. Inside, the air was cool and calm. Malik followed her as she browsed, never rushing her. “You don’t have to buy anything,” she said quietly. “I know,” he replied. “But you deserve nice things too.” She did not argue. Later, they sat outside, watching traffic pass by. “Are you okay?” he asked. “I don’t know how to feel,” she said honestly. “That’s okay,” he replied. “You don’t have to figure everything out today.” For a moment, she allowed herself to enjoy the peace. But as evening settled in and she returned home, a sense of unease returned. When she checked her phone, there was only one unread message. From an unknown number. You think you know him. You don’t. Be careful. Amara’s breath caught. The chill that ran through her had nothing to do with the night air.
