15 Three armed men from the group that had greeted Bev earlier stood outside the back of the building in a halo of yellow light that cut into the desert darkness. They smoked short cigarettes and spoke quietly in Spanish. They were not missing their compadres yet. One of them laughed, his voice louder than the other two. Bev instinctively squatted behind Sam and B, staying low. Sam was considering scenarios in his mind, the dog alert and waiting.
