~Kate~
I wake up the next day and for a minute I have no idea where I am. What I do know is that I am thirsty as hell, so I stumble out of bed, and start looking around puzzled.
And then it all comes rushing back to me. Oh right. THAT happened, it wasn’t just a nightmare. I push back tears that are suddenly coming to my eyes. Holy s**t, what did I get myself into. I felt really homesick as well, this was the first night ever away from my mum and dad.
I still felt kind of groggy, I stumbled into the bathroom, turned the faucet on and started drinking. When I finally quenched my thirst, I looked up and took a look in the mirror.
Yep, those weird silver specks are still there. “Looks kind of cool I think, bad ass even…. too bad I also have those huge bags underneath my eyes… Ah well, you cannot have it all…” I tell myself out loud. Then I put the faucet back on and splash some cold water in my face. “That’s better”.
I walk back into the, or I should say my bedroom to look for my backpack. Weird, to think of it in that way, such a big room and all mine… “Hey, what the hell? What happened to my stuff?” I mumbled to myself, when I could not find my backpack anywhere. I was sure I left it next to the couch!
I opened the wardrobe, and to my surprise, there were all my clothes and my backpack was lying on the bottom, empty.
Usually I am a very light sleeper, and I awake when mum or dad get home from working late, or when they have to get up real early. But somehow, somebody had been in here to unpack my stuff and I slept right through it. I must have been exhausted… “Yeah, well, I really was, you know”, I continue my morning conversation with myself, while I open up the curtains. “Look at that, the sun is already rising, wow, how long did I sleep?” I looked around, but did not see a clock of any kind, so I shrugged and let it go.
I decided to get some clean clothes from the cupboard and take a quick shower before I really would have to confront the new day, by going downstairs to meet the mysterious ‘everyone’ mrs. Winger mentioned yesterday.
The bathroom is fully stocked with fluffy towels, shampoo and shower gel that both had a heavenly fragrance. “A girl could get used to this”, I smiled to myself.
Refreshed and hungry, I quickly got dressed, jeans and a hoody, nice and comfy, and I put my hair in a quick ponytail. “That will have to do for a first impression”, I grinned to myself. “Let’s go eat, I can smell breakfast already!” Luckily my appetite didn’t suffer from stress and traumatic life experiences, like being kicked out of your pack..
I opened my door and went downstairs. My nose hadn’t deceived me, on the kitchen counter was a breakfast buffet, with scrambled eggs, bacon, freshly baked muffins, pancakes, fresh fruit, the works! You could clearly see she wasn’t the first one there, but by the looks of it, there was still plenty left!
“Help yourself dear, and don’t be modest, eat all you want, you’ll need your strength”. She almost jumped at the sound of mrs. Wingers voice. Had she been there the whole time? “Uh, yeah, ok, thanks!” I smiled and got a plate and started to pile on a big breakfast and dug in.
“This is so weird”, I thought to myself. “Other people who had made her breakfast, and she sitting down at the breakfast table, instead of quickly grabbing some leftovers… My world has really gone topsy turvy!”
I saw mrs. Winger smiling at me. “Oh, shoot, can she hear everything I am thinking?” I blushed at the thought of that. “Don’t worry dear, I don’t make a habit of invading one's thoughts uninvited, unless there is a great need to do so”. I blushed even more. “And no, I am not in your mind right now, but the look on your face said it all” mrs. Winger chuckled.
I grinned “Good to know. You startled me, I did not see you at first, so that is why I got a bit jumpy” I explained.
“That’s quite all right my dear, just enjoy your breakfast for now, you are the last one up, so don’t hold back. There is coffee in the pot and freshly squeezed orange juice in the fridge! I have to go check on some things and will be back shortly. Then we’ll start on getting you ready for your new life!”
She did not have to tell me twice. I enjoyed the luxury of having the breakfast table all to myself, with more than enough food and drinks. I got up to pour myself a big glass of OJ and found a huge sized mug for my coffee. “Yeah, just as I liked it, strong, black and plenty of it!” I sighed contently.
When I was full, I just sat enjoying the silence for a minute, just taking a sip of my coffee now and then. A big ginger cat came walking in, saw me sitting there and decided to jump on my lap. “Hey Kitty, who are you? You remind me of Garfield! Don’t you know that cats and wolves don’t usually get along together?” The cat looked up at me indignantly, or so it seemed.
“Yeah, you are right, I found that to be one of those stupid rules without any grounds to it, I would have loved to have a house cat growing up” I chuckled, at which the cat reacted by settling down, putting his head in my elbow and purring loudly. I smiled, did I just have a conversation with a cat?
I suddenly realized that I could try and contact mum and dad, so I reached out to them and got a bit emotional because of the flood of love and care that I felt coming over me. “I never knew it would be like this, mind linking” I told mum and dad.
“Well, that is not so strange, because for normal wolves this isn’t normal, but for the few special ones, and luckily for us it runs in both your dad’s and my family, you get the whole picture, including emotions and feelings. Part of it is talent, part of it is also knowing that this is possible. Luckily the alpha and crones don’t have any talent or knowledge of this, so that makes our life a bit easier, doesn’t it?” mum said with a wink.
“Good to know”, I grinned back. “I really miss you guys, it was so weird waking up without you there. But my room is really nice, you would not believe how big it is. And I have a bathroom all to myself, can you believe that? Now I am having breakfast, which I didn’t have to cook, and I have everything to myself, because everybody else already ate, mrs. Winger said… and now I am getting anxious about what is going to happen” I blurted out everything I wanted to share in one go….
“You will do fine” I heard my dad say. “So good to hear from you, let us try to get in touch every morning, shall we? Maybe a bit earlier than today, your mum and I really need to focus on work… Lunch isn’t going to prepare itself and I have to finish a baby shower cake, Emma, the gamma’s eldest daughter is expecting a pup!”
“Oh is she having her baby shower today? I knew she was expecting, she is one of the nicer higher ranking wolves, so make it an extra good cake! She loves the combo of chocolate and peanuts” I told my dad.
“Way ahead of you, cupcake, putting the finishing touches on the salty peanut brittle that is going to be the crunchy effect in the chocolate cake”. My mum didn’t say anything, but I felt her smile.
“Ok lovely parents, you go focus on your jobs, but could we please link again tonight or something when you are off work, so you can fill me in on how things are over there, are you guys in trouble over me?” I felt a pang of guilt for putting my parents through all this.
“Don’t worry about us Katie dear, your father and I got away with a symbolic reprimande. They bought us rejecting you and lucky for us the alpha loves our food and our cakes and desserts too much, so he decided to let us off easily”, mum chuckled. I chuckled as well. The appetite of the alpha was legendary among the pack!
We ended the mind link with what I can describe only as a mind-hug, and when we broke the contact I had to take a deep breath to keep my emotions in check. I never used to want to cry this much, djeez..
I took a deep breath and rubbed away my tears. The cat decided that to be a good moment to take off, so I took my plate and coffee and walked up to the kitchen sink. I started to look for ways to clean up breakfast, but before I could really start looking, mrs. Winger came bursting in, and said: “don’t worry about cleaning up dear, that is not your job today. Just come with me, you’ll get to know everybody this afternoon”
