When the movie ended, Devin pulled me along with him.
"I really, really like you. Are you free tonight? I had a ring custom-made for you. It's back in my hotel room."
'Here it comes.'
My face immediately flushed. "I don't think that would be appropriate."
Devin smiled indulgently. "Nonsense. I don't bite."
Sandy couldn't hold back any longer. She lunged forward and grabbed at me. I instinctively shoved her away, but she tumbled to the floor.
"Laura, I know you didn't want me to tell him the truth, but you can't just push me like that!"
Rex rushed over to help her up. "Laura! What the hell are you doing?"
Devin frowned. "Why did he call you Laura?"
The whole lie was about to unravel.
Sandy crawled to Devin's feet and clung to his leg.
"I'm so sorry, Devin. The truth is, I'm the one who's been dating you all along.
"My little sister was jealous that I had such a wonderful boyfriend, so she secretly sent you a picture of herself.
"I knew what she did was wrong, but as her sister, I couldn't bring myself to blame her. I had no choice but to go along with her charade."
In just a few sentences, she twisted the entire story and made herself the victim.
Rex also stepped forward.
"Devin, Sandy might not be as stunning as Laura, but she has a good heart. Unlike someone who may be pretty on the outside, but poisonous underneath."
I watched their little performance with a cold sneer.
Too bad Devin was no decent man. He hadn't come here looking for true love.
Devin blinked as though he were processing the sudden revelation.
Then he turned to me. "That's fine, Laura. I don't mind at all."
Sandy's face twisted with rage.
The moment Devin left, Sandy seized my arm and dragged me into the women's restroom.
She slammed me against the cold tiled wall and yanked my hair.
"Laura, you b***h! You stole my boyfriend! Are you happy now? What have you ever had besides that pretty face? You're nothing but a shameless little seductress!"
I refused to back down. I grabbed a fistful of her hair and punched her square in the face.
We were in the women's restroom, so Rex couldn't barge in. And Sandy, who had been spoiled rotten her entire life, was no match for me in an actual fight.
Blood poured from her nose as she stared at me in utter disbelief.
Then I softened my voice into a honeyed murmur.
"You just want to be with Devin, right? I can make that happen."
