One Day Only

LEAH The Kane mansion didn’t look real from the outside. It sat on the edge of the city like something that had been carved out of black stone and quiet money, all sharp lines and tall windows that reflected the late afternoon sun without ever letting you see inside. My mother’s old uniform felt too tight across my chest as I stood at the service gate. My fingers were curled around the strap of the small bag I’d brought. One day. That was all I needed. One shift to keep her job safe until she could walk again. I pressed the intercom. A woman’s voice answered, so clipped and professional. “Name?” “Leah Heather. I’m covering for Maria Heather today.” There was a short pause, then the gate clicked open. The driveway curved through perfectly kept hedges and silent fountains. There were no other cars, no gardeners. Just the sound of my own shoes on the stone path as I walked toward the side entrance the housekeeper had told me to use. My heart was beating too fast. I kept telling myself it was only nerves. People this rich always made me nervous. Well, never that I had encountered many. As soon as I stepped inside, the air was colder and a chill ran down my spine. My eyes scanned everything. Marble floors stretched in every direction, polished to a mirror shine. The walls were a deep charcoal, broken only by abstract paintings that looked like they cost more than my entire apartment building. A woman in a black dress met me in the service hallway. She looked me up and down once, eyes lingering on the slightly faded seams of the uniform that had belonged to my mother. “You’re the daughter,” she said. Not a question. “Yes. I’ll be covering for my mother just for today.” She handed me a small tablet. “Mr. Kane is in his study. You will not speak unless spoken to. You will not enter any room without permission. And you will not go near the third floor. Clear?” I nodded. She led me through a series of corridors that all looked the same until we stopped in front of a heavy wooden door. She knocked once, then opened it without waiting for an answer. “The temporary help, sir.” She glanced at me and moved. I stepped inside. The study was darker than the rest of the house. Floor-to-ceiling windows were covered by half-drawn shades, letting in only thin bars of light. Bookshelves lined the walls. A massive desk sat near the center, and behind it- He looked up. Dominic Kane was larger than I expected. Broad shoulders filled out a black shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. Dark hair, streaked with a little silver at the temples. A face that looked like it had been carved by someone who didn’t believe in softness. He had to be in his mid-forties, but there was nothing soft or fading about him. His eyes were a cold, clear gray, and the second they landed on me, something in the room changed. He went completely still. I felt it before I understood it. A sudden, low heat bloomed low in my stomach and then dropped lower. My thighs pressed together on instinct. At the same time, a strange tightness pulled across my chest, like my bra had suddenly become two sizes too small. A warm, wet sensation gathered between my legs, unexpected and sharp enough that my breath caught. What the hell- I didn’t know what was happening to my body. I only knew that the man behind the desk had not blinked since the door opened. The housekeeper cleared her throat. “Sir? Should I assign her to the east wing with the others?” Dom’s voice was low. Rough. Like it hadn’t been used much today. “No.” Just that one word. He stood slowly, never taking his eyes off me and I shifted uneasily. The movement was controlled, but there was something underneath it- something coiled. He walked around the desk and stopped a few feet away. Close enough that I could smell the clean, dark scent of whatever cologne he wore… or maybe it wasn’t cologne. It settled into my lungs and made the heat between my legs pulse harder. I swallowed and tried to avoid holding eye contact but failed miserably. “You’re Maria’s daughter,” he said. “Yes, sir.” “How old are you?” “Twenty-one.” His gaze dropped for half a second to the front of my uniform, then back to my face. I had the sudden, mortifying thought that he could somehow see the dampness that had started to gather there. My cheeks burned in shame and humiliation. He turned his head slightly toward the housekeeper without looking away from me. “Clear the private wing. No one else should be on the second floor today. She’s the only one who works it.” The woman hesitated. “Sir, the schedule-” “I said clear it.” The door closed behind her a moment later. The sound was soft, but it felt final and I was trapped with the monster. We were alone. Dominic took one step closer. The air between us felt thicker. My breasts ached with a strange, unfamiliar pressure, and I had to fight the urge to cross my arms over my chest. Whatever was happening to my body was getting worse the longer he stared at me. “What’s your name?” he asked. “Leah.” “Leah.” He repeated it like he was testing the shape of it in his mouth. “You’re only here for one day.” “Yes.” I forced my voice out but it still fell to a whisper. “Then you’ll do exactly as I say while you’re in my house.” His voice stayed quiet, but there was an edge under it now. “You clean my private wing. You don’t go anywhere else. You don’t touch anything on my desk. And if I walk into a room, you stop what you’re doing and wait until I tell you to continue. Understood?” I nodded, because my voice suddenly felt unreliable. I watched as he studied me for another long second. His nostrils flared once, almost too subtle to notice. Something dark flickered behind his eyes. “You’re nervous,” he said. “I’ve never worked in a place like this.” I muttered, fingers fidgeting nervously. “That’s not what I meant.” My pulse jumped. I didn’t know how to answer, so I stayed quiet. The wetness between my thighs had started to feel impossible to ignore. I shifted my weight, hoping he wouldn’t notice. He noticed. A muscle in his jaw flexed. “Start in the sitting room across the hall,” he said finally, voice lower than before. “Supplies are in the closet to the left. When you finish, wait outside my study door. Do not leave the floor.” I turned to go, grateful for the chance to put distance between us. My legs felt unsteady. “Leah.” I stopped with my hand on the doorframe. When I looked back, he was still standing in the same place, watching me with an intensity that made the air feel too thin. “One day,” he said quietly. “That’s what you told yourself when you walked through my gate, isn’t it?” I didn’t answer. He didn’t seem to need me to. “We’ll see,” he murmured, almost to himself. Then he turned away and sat back down behind the desk, as if the conversation was over. I stepped into the hallway and closed the door behind me. My hands were trembling. The ache in my chest had spread, heavy and warm, and every step made me aware of the slick heat that still hadn’t stopped. What was wrong with my body? I had never felt like this. I didn’t understand any of it. I only knew that something had shifted the moment those gray eyes locked onto mine. And for reasons I couldn’t name yet, I already felt like one day was not going to be enough- or safe…..
