IVORY'S POV
I needed to find out the truth for myself, so I rose from the bed and searched for a coat to wear. Then I lifted the flap of the tent and stepped out.
As usual, little kids ran around the clearing, shrieking in their innocent playfulness. The women bowed to me as I passed. I was their Beta, and in this world—where the weak were trampled by the strong—a female Beta was rare.
But if they saw me now—restless, distracted, and undone by a bond I didn’t understand—would they still bow?
I went to the Alpha’s lodge to explain my absence during the ceremony yesterday.
The guards let me in, but I was stopped shortly after by the Gamma.
“The Alpha has been in seclusion since yesterday,” he said, his tone cautious.
My brows furrowed. Really?
“Where is he?” I asked.
He hesitated before gesturing down a quieter corridor. “He ordered not to be disturbed… but if you must, he’s there.”
I didn’t wait.
As I approached the secluded wing, something incredible happened — my wolf stirred.
And I perceived the intoxicating scent from that forest yesterday. Wait, my mate was here?!
My breath hitched as my wolf pushed forward eagerly.
Mate.
I walked up to the door and froze as it opened. The air thickened instantly.
He stood there—bare-chested and muscular, every inch of him screaming dominance. A golden chain rested against his chest; the golden chain I saw last night on his wolf. His scent wrapped around me, drowning out everything else.
“It’s… it’s you?” I stammered. He was the Alpha of our pack. How on earth could I be mated to the Alpha? Did the moon goddess make a mistake?
My gaze lingered on his bare chest, and a shiver ran through me.
I wanted him. I didn't just want—I needed him. The need burned through me, unbearable and consuming.
I stepped forward, "Draven—"
“Stay back, Ivory,” he warned, his voice strained. His jaw clenched, chest rising and falling too fast. His hand tightened on the door as if he might slam it shut soon.
He was fighting it.
Fighting our bond. Just like he did yesternight in that forest.
My wolf snarled in anger. Mate does not refuse.
“No, I won’t.”
I pushed the door open and slipped inside before he could shut me out again.
“You’ve lost your mind, Ivory,” he said, dragging a hand through his hair, clearly agitated.
“You forgot that this is forbidden.” he said, gazing at me.
My mouth hung open. He was right.
In the Obsidian pack, an Alpha and a female Beta mating was forbidden—like a brother mating his blood sister. It was unheard of.
But this—this bond—was real.
We were the first of our kind.
Now we stood too close—close enough to feel each other’s breath. His gaze dropped to my lips, dark and hungry. Mine lingered on his face, then dropped to his velvety lips, which he licked
“Draven, I know this is wrong…” I whispered, though my body betrayed me, leaning closer into his warmth. He licked his velvety lips slowly, rousing something deep inside me.
In one swift motion, Draven swept me off my feet, and his lips crashed into mine. Hot, desperate and needy.
The kiss stole the air from my lungs. A growl rumbled deep in his chest as he bit my lower lip, and I moaned, wrapping my legs around his waist, pulling him closer.
For a fleeting second, a thought flickered—If anyone opened the door and saw us…
I crushed it.
Nothing mattered except him.
His mouth trailed down my neck, leaving fire in its wake. I gasped, pressing against him, my body acting on instinct.
“Mark me, Draven,” I pleaded, my voice trembling. The sweet spot at the crook of my neck ached. “Please…”
My wolf howled in agreement. Claim him. Complete it.
“Mark me,” I whispered again.
His mouth hovered over the spot, breathing hot against my skin, making my core clench wildly.
“No.” he said breathlessly. "I can't do this."
My heart sank.
"Draven?” My voice was shaky.
“Get off me.” He pushed me away.
The warning in his tone sent a chill through me.
His eyes had turned red, green veins bulging across his forehead. His entire body trembled as if he were holding back something violent, something dangerous.
He was in pain.
So was I.
A sharp headache crashed into me. I gasped, clutching my head as my teeth chattered. The bond pulsed, like it was being forced apart. It wanted us to mate. To mark each other forever.
“Leave. Now!" He ordered me.
“Draven, what are you doing?” I demanded, my voice breaking. Our separation was only going to make everything worse.
“You don’t understand what this will cost you,” he said hoarsely. “The bond—it’s a taboo. A century ago, an alpha and a female Beta in our same situation were branded outcasts.” He shook his head, breathing hard.
“The Alpha lineage in my family will not end with me. So, please... try to understand."
“You only care about yourself!” I shouted, tears spilling down my cheeks. We were suffering but all he cared about was losing his f*****g position?
“You’re the Alpha, Draven. You make the rules—so change them!” I yelled.
"Change them so we could be together. Please." I pleaded.
“I need time to think,” he groaned, his face as red as burning embers. “I have to think.”
Something in me cracked.
I pushed away from him and stormed out, slamming the door so hard it echoed down the hallway.
Hastily wiping my tears, I hurried out of the lodge. My chest tightened, my vision blurring.
On my way out, I into a messenger.
“Are you okay? You’re crying,” he said, concern etched across his face.
“I’m okay—I’m okay. I just hit my nose,” I sniffled.
“I have news,” he added.
“What is it?” I asked, my voice unsteady.
“The Alpha.”
My stomach dropped. I had a premonition. “What about him?”
“His mating ceremony is tomorrow.”
What?! The world tilted and for a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
