Chapter 5

700 Words
"Once this is over, I'll take you to Hawaii. You've always wanted to go, right?" Yes, Amelia had always wanted to go. Married for ten years, she had mentioned it to him more than once, saying she wanted to watch the sunrise at the seaside with him. But he had always let it go in one ear and out the other, never truly taking it to heart. Now, to make her obedient, to save Caleb, the woman he truly loved, he was actually willing to placate her with a trip. Amelia said nothing. Dominic didn't linger either. Watching his resolute back, Amelia leaned weakly against the headboard. Tears finally slipped down her cheeks, unstoppable. She mocked her own stupidity. Being deceived for ten years in her past life wasn't enough. Even reborn, she had still harbored a sliver of hope for this man. She thought he might be able to distinguish right from wrong. She thought there might be some affection for her in his heart. But reality had slapped her hard across the face. For Caleb, he could ignore the truth. He could slander her character. A slight, dragging pain suddenly came from her lower abdomen. Amelia's expression changed. She took a deep breath and gradually calmed herself down. She knew that only by first stabilizing Dominic could she find a chance to escape. Perhaps because she had behaved obediently for a few days, Dominic's supervision over her relaxed slightly. She hadn't gotten her phone back, but she was allowed to move around within the hospital floor. Amelia had been wanting to find out about the recovery of the accident victim, and also wanted to find a chance to call the police. She walked slowly along the corridor. When she reached a room with its door left slightly ajar, familiar voices came from inside. Amelia paused mid-step and peered through the c***k in the door. It was Dominic and Caleb. Dominic was sitting by the bed, feeding Caleb congee. He scooped up a spoonful, carefully blew it cool, his movements gentle. His eyes held a tenderness and cherishing she had never seen before, a stark contrast to the dark, cold indifference he showed her. Caleb's mouth was slightly open, a fragile yet sweet smile on her face. This scene was like a sharp knife, viciously gouging at her heart. Ten years of marriage. She had brought him water and medicine, supported him faithfully, never leaving his side. She had even learned massage techniques to ease the lingering pain in his left leg. But one night, when she had a high fever and wanted a drink of water, he had simply ignored her. So he did know how to be gentle. It was just that this gentleness had never been meant for her. Years of her devotion, in this moment, seemed utterly ridiculous. Amelia stood outside the door, her whole body icy cold, her fingertips trembling slightly. Inside the hospital room, Caleb suddenly reached out and tightly hugged Dominic, her cheek gently resting on his shoulder. "Dominic, I know I don't have many days left. I want to fulfill that wedding we were supposed to have ten years ago. It's been my dream since childhood." Dominic remained silent for a long time. Caleb felt his hesitation. She looked up, her eyes filled with aggrieved tears. "Are you still angry with me? I acted on impulse back then. By the time I wanted to come back to you, I heard you had already married Amelia." Outside the door, Amelia laughed coldly in her heart. She understood all too well what Dominic's silence meant. On one hand, his crippled leg made him reluctant to burden Caleb. On the other hand, he still needed her, Amelia, to save Caleb. In his eyes, Caleb was kind and innocent. She would surely never agree to him harming Amelia. So he could only remain silent. Amelia didn't stay any longer. She turned silently and walked step by step back towards her own room. She had just sat down in her room when the door was pushed open. Caleb walked in, her face bearing an undisguised expression of arrogance and smugness. "Little sister, long time no see."
