Chapter 7

He walked to the bedside, looking down at Amelia from on high. "Because of your actions, Amelia's condition suddenly worsened. You'll donate bone marrow to her. Consider it atonement." "Dominic! You're insane!" Amelia struggled desperately, but the restraints only grew tighter against her skin. Dominic coldly instructed the nurse, "Gag her." A piece of gauze was immediately stuffed into Amelia's mouth. All she could manage were muffled whimpers. She watched helplessly as the needle pierced her vein. Her bright red blood flowed through the tube into the blood bag, one bag after another. Time seemed to stretch infinitely. Amelia felt her strength being drained away, bit by bit. An icy chill spread through her limbs, and cold sweat covered her body. After what felt like an eternity, the nurse's face turned grim as she spoke to Dominic. "Mr. Hawthorne, if we draw any more, she might not make it." Amelia's consciousness was already fading. Her vision darkened intermittently. Through the haze, she vaguely heard Dominic's cold voice. "Stop." When Amelia woke up, an overwhelming fatigue crashed over her like a tidal wave. For the sake of the child in her womb, she mechanically swallowed the nutritional meals the servants brought. Each bite carried an indescribable bitterness. A few days later, two bodyguards informed her she was to go to the rooftop to attend Caleb's birthday party. "I'm not going." Amelia refused without a second thought. But the bodyguards immediately came forward, hoisted her up, and placed her in a wheelchair. Amelia struggled a few times, but the bodyguards firmly pressed down on her shoulders. She could only let them take her to the rooftop. The rooftop terrace was decorated with extreme luxury. Dazzling lights illuminated the night sky, and flowers and ribbons were everywhere. Caleb wore a magnificent haute couture gown, her makeup exquisite. Clinging to Dominic's arm, she stood in the center of the crowd, her parents also by her side. She was like a true princess, basking in everyone's blessings and attention. And Amelia, dressed in a loose hospital gown, pale-faced, sat alone in a wheelchair, utterly out of place amidst the surrounding hustle and bustle and luxury. Anyone who didn't know better might have thought she was the one who was seriously ill. The gazes of the surrounding guests pricked at her like tiny needles. Caleb spotted her and walked over a few steps. "My sister, today is my birthday. Dominic specially arranged this party for me. I thought you might be lonely in your room, so I had the bodyguards bring you up to share in the festive spirit." A wave of bitterness washed over Amelia's heart. She and Caleb were twins. They were born on the exact same day, month, and year. Yet from childhood to now, everyone only ever remembered Caleb's birthday. As for her, she was always the forgotten one, never even receiving a simple blessing. An indescribable sense of grievance and fury surged within her. Amelia gripped the armrests of the wheelchair, wanting only to flee this suffocating place immediately. Then, suddenly, two large floor lamps near the entrance exploded! Shards of glass instantly sprayed in all directions. Without a moment's hesitation, Dominic spun around and tightly pulled Caleb into his embrace, using his own back to shield her. And Amelia, completely exposed, bore the full force of the fragments. Sharp pieces of glass embedded into her face, her neck, her arms. A searing pain shot through her instantly as the skin was slashed open, leaving bloody gashes. Her parents also rushed immediately to Caleb's side, anxiously asking, "Amelia, are you alright? Are you hurt anywhere?" Amelia trembled with pain. Before she could even recover, she felt a burning sting on her calf. She looked down and saw that the leg of her hospital pants had caught fire. Flames were rapidly climbing up the fabric, scorching her skin. She frantically patted at the flames with her hands, but the fire grew fiercer and wouldn't be extinguished. The flames quickly spread to her thigh. Amelia, frantic and on the verge of tears, looked up and screamed towards Dominic, "Dominic! Save me!"
