Chapter 8

Dominic turned his head and saw the flames on her body. His pupils suddenly constricted. But Caleb, held protectively in his arms, chose that moment to let out a muffled groan. "Dominic, it hurts so much." Just that one sentence instantly drew all of Dominic's attention back to her. He immediately lowered his head to comfort Caleb, completely forgetting Amelia still struggling in the sea of fire. The fire had already spread to her entire leg. The searing pain nearly made Amelia lose consciousness. Seeing the flames about to reach her upper body, she could no longer think of anything else. Using all her remaining strength, she crawled out of the wheelchair and rolled on the ground covered in broken glass. Sharp glass shards pierced deep into her back, chest, and limbs. The pain was almost enough to make her faint. But fortunately, the flames on her body were finally extinguished. Before she could catch her breath, however, a violent cramp tore through her lower abdomen. It felt as if something was being ripped away from her. She looked down. A large pool of bright red blood had seeped out beneath her, mixing with the charred, mangled wounds on her legs. The sight was horrifying. Amelia's body convulsed in pain, curling up uncontrollably. "My child…" She opened her mouth, her voice carrying the despair and helplessness of the dying. The extreme agony made the sounds around her blurry and distant. Her consciousness could no longer hold on, and she fainted from the sheer pain. When Amelia woke up, even breathing pulled at her burns and cuts, causing cold sweat to stream down her face from the pain. But the emotions in her heart felt as if they had been drained away, vanishing like smoke along with her unborn child, leaving behind only a dead, hollow numbness. She grieved for the child she would never meet, yet a part of her secretly felt that perhaps this was for the best. With the child gone, the last thread of connection between her and Dominic was completely severed. Amelia still had an old phone in her bedroom. She had to get that phone to find a way to escape. After recuperating in the hospital for half a month, Dominic finally agreed to let her return to the villa to recover further. On the day of her discharge, just as she stepped through the villa's entrance, she saw two people sitting in the living room. Dominic was lounging on the sofa, while Caleb nestled close to his side, dressed in casual home wear, looking very much like the lady of the house. When Caleb saw Amelia, she immediately put on an expression of gratitude and guilt. "My sister, welcome home! Thank you for being willing to donate bone marrow to save me. I really don't know how to thank you enough." "She is your sister. It was only right for her to save you. You don't need to feel sorry." Dominic's tone was flat, as if stating an obvious fact. The smile on Caleb's face deepened, a glint of malice flashing in her eyes. "Regardless, you are my savior. I've prepared a gift for you. I hope you like it." Soon, a servant approached carrying a bamboo birdcage. Inside the cage was a grayish-brown turtledove. "My sister, I know you must get bored in the villa. I specially chose this turtledove to keep you company. It has a gentle nature and is particularly attached to its nest." "It's just a pity, sometimes it mistakes another's nest for its own, occupying someone else's place without even realizing it." Caleb's words were clearly an insult, calling her a turtledove that had usurped someone else's nest, shamelessly occupying the position that rightfully belonged to her. Amelia's expression remained blank, not a single ripple in her eyes. She refused without hesitation. "I don't like it. You keep it for yourself." With that, she headed for the stairs. "Dominic." Caleb immediately put on a hurt expression, tugging at Dominic's sleeve. "I specially chose a gift for her, it was a thoughtful gesture. Can't you persuade her?" Amelia expected Dominic to, as usual, blindly accuse her of being difficult and force her to accept this insulting gift. But to her surprise, he merely cast a brief glance at her retreating back. "If she doesn't want it, forget it." Amelia was slightly startled for a moment but didn't dwell on it. She quickened her pace back to the bedroom. She opened the storage compartment at the bottom of her wardrobe and found the old phone. After powering it on, the first thing she saw was an unread notification on the email icon. The email content was very brief. "If you are determined to leave, go to the following address one month from now. Someone will assist you in leaving the country." Attached below was a detailed address and contact information. She checked the date of the email. It was tomorrow. As long as she arrived at that address on time tomorrow, she could escape this cage. The gloom that had weighed on her heart for days seemed to disperse. A glimmer of long-lost hope ignited in Amelia's eyes. Suddenly, footsteps sounded outside the door. Amelia's expression changed. She quickly hid the phone, turned around, and sat down on the sofa. The bedroom door was pushed open gently. Dominic walked in.
