Amelia took a deep breath, forcing down the churning hatred and fear in her chest.
She faced the mirror and splashed cold water on her cheeks. The icy sensation fully awakened her.
In her past life, she had immediately told Dominic about the pregnancy. She had naively believed his happiness was for the child, only learning later that it was simply because Caleb finally had a chance to be saved.
This time, she would not repeat that mistake.
Amelia turned and walked to the toilet. Without hesitation, she dropped the pregnancy test inside and pressed the flush button. The swirling water swept it away, as if washing away all the foolishness and obsession from her previous life.
She had to divorce him as quickly as possible. She could not let Dominic know she was pregnant.
Just then, her phone rang. It was her mother calling.
"Amelia," her mother's voice carried a rare note of concern, "I found someone who gave me a folk remedy for pregnancy. You should try it immediately! You've been married so many years, you need to have a child quickly to keep Dominic tied down."
A chill ran through Amelia's heart.
Her mother had always favored the outstanding and articulate Caleb since childhood, and had always been cold toward her. After the marriage, she frequently belittled her, always saying she had only gotten this life because of Caleb.
In her past life, it was only after Caleb returned that her mother suddenly became so attentive to her pregnancy matters.
A terrifying thought flashed through her mind.
Could her parents already know about Caleb's illness?
Were they conspiring with Dominic to deceive her?
Amelia suppressed the turbulent waves of shock in her heart and responded silently as usual.
Her mother quickly hung up.
She looked at the darkened screen, a bitter, self-mocking smile curling at the corner of her mouth.
There was no time for grief. She opened her email and sent a brief, urgent plea for help to the email address that sent her greetings every year.
Then she rushed into the study and pulled out a prenuptial agreement.
Back then, Dominic had thought she was also being forced into the marriage. He said if she ever found someone she loved, she could leave anytime using this agreement.
At the time, she hadn't taken it seriously. Little did she expect it would now become her lifeline.
Amelia picked up a pen, signed her name without hesitation, and went to the civil affairs bureau to submit the divorce application.
After coming out, Amelia had just driven around a corner when an electric bike suddenly shot out from an alley. She slammed on the brakes.
The tremendous force slammed Amelia's forehead hard against the steering wheel. A dull pain struck, and warm liquid trickled down from her temple.
But before Amelia could even catch her breath, she saw a white car crash directly into the electric bike.
The rider fell heavily onto the road. Blood instantly spread out from beneath them.
Amelia was frozen with shock. Instinctively, she pushed open her car door to go check.
At the same moment, the door of the white car opened, and the person who stepped out was actually Caleb.
Caleb's face was deathly pale. Her panicked eyes swept over the injured person on the ground, then suddenly locked onto Amelia, as if she had found a lifeline.
"Sister!" She rushed over to Amelia, her voice laced with deliberate fear and accusation. "How were you driving? How could you hit someone like this?"
Amelia's head was buzzing. She immediately retorted, "You hit them! Call an ambulance!"
"What do you mean I hit them?" Caleb's eyes darted nervously, but her tone grew more certain. "It's obvious you were speeding and couldn't swerve in time! I was just passing by!"
As she spoke, she kept backing away. "I have things to do, I need to go. I'll leave this for you to handle!"
"Caleb!" Amelia tried to grab her, but Caleb swiftly dove into her car and sped off, disappearing into the distance.
Watching Caleb's fleeing back, then looking at the dying injured person on the ground, Amelia was both frantic and furious. Her chest heaved violently.
Ignoring the wound on her forehead, she immediately took out her phone and called emergency services.
After hanging up, Amelia felt the world spinning. Her vision darkened, and she fainted, collapsing straight to the ground.
