14 LYNNE “You know, sometimes I wonder where a skinny guy like you puts all that food,” I chided Connor as I cleared the dinner dishes from the table. “Think you’ll have room for the cake?” “Cake?” he asked. “Um-hmm.” I removed the cover from a cake plate, revealing a lopsided cake topped with six mismatched candles I’d gotten from Isabella, who had leftovers from her three kids birthdays.
