57 CONNOR New Zealand is one of the most beautiful, unspoiled places on earth, for the most part removed from the so-called “rat race” plaguing the rest of the world. It’s a land of mountains, glaciers, fjords and rivers, of grassy fields, lakes and evergreen forests. Three quarters of the population inhabits the North Island, but it is the more remote South Island to which Lynne and I went in search of a safe place in which to take refuge while we awaited the birth of our baby. Christchurch, founded in 1850 as a colony of the Church of England, was named for Oxford University’s college, where the city’s founder received his education.
