Why Now?

“What the f**k was that, Keane?” I looked at my beta. We went back to our territory that was close. We were not supposed to be seen. They were supposed to stay hidden and not engage with anyone, yet Anthony decided to attack that girl. Lennox and I were amazed at her skills. We thought for sure Anthony, Derrick, and Malachi were going to tear that girl up. I never thought I would see my big bad gamma, delta, and head warrior get their butts kicked by a girl. They were enraged, to say the least, why Derrick thought about the need to “Let’s take him to the training field and do the same thing to him.” Lennox was growling in my head; I could feel a migraine coming on.

“I don't want to talk about it with you.” Why did you growl at Derrick like that? Or lick her? The witch threw off our smells, but what if your lick makes her smell like you! You have a meeting with Alpha Quinton today. What if he or Cohen recognizes your scent-- “Maddox breathe, it will be fine. Lennox could not help himself. Scram I do not want to talk about it!” He ran to the others, and I sulked behind them.

“Are you sure, Lennox?”

“No, she is still young and not with wolves, but I could smell her more than I have ever smelt any of the she-wolves you have been with.”

“You licked her not knowing? You know the rules! You do not lick anyone other than your mate! And you nipped her, but what was that for?”

“I could smell it. We aroused her, she is still pure. No one else had touched her. If she is our mate, we will be here first.”

I could feel the possessive feeling I already had growing when he revealed that it made my heart thump, I needed to meet her and protect her. s**t! I cannot... Alpha Quinton is under secret investigation by the King. There have been reports of people showing up missing out of his pack and women being sold into slavery. I will have to protect her from afar. I set off to my office. As I walked in the door, my dad was sitting on the couch with my mom. I wondered what had happened.

“Hey mom, hey dad, what is wrong?

“Oh, nothing, son, we just wanted to chat. Do you have time?” asked my mom. She is still the luna of my pack since I have not found my mate yet.

“I will always be available for you. What is it?

“Well, um... We think you should take a chosen mate.” my chest tightened

“Your mother’s right, Keane, you are 21 years old, you have traveled the world 3 times looking for your mate, training in various places. You haven't met her yet, and it will be better for the pack if you have a luna.”

I stared at my parents for a second and found myself rambling before I could stop myself, “We went to Alpha Quintons, border and were just going to observe, but we misread the map and somehow stumbled on a girl, and before I could rain Anthony, Derrick, and Malachi in they attacked her. She whooped their asses as well as our warriors and by the time me and Lennox could get to her, it was like the world stopped. I felt like I knew her and I don't know if she felt it too, or she thought I was going to fight her next, but she took her focus off anyone else and Derrick sliced her up real good. I may or may not have growled at him and stood over her and Lennox may or may not have licked her.” They both inhaled hard, and I hurried to push through. “Lennox thinks She's our mate and I think she is as well, but dad, whatever he is teaching his warriors is out doing our warriors 100% of the time.”

I smacked myself in the face. Why did I tell them that I was not going to tell anyone, I was going to keep it to myself until I could process it more. I looked at my dad, and he had a s**t eating grin on his face.

“What?”

“Derrick is not going to be happy, because how is he going to protect someone when he gets his ass kicked? Who is she? Do we know her parents?”

“ Lennox, did you recognize her scent?”

“You wouldn't believe me if I told you so just no.”

“What do you mean? You are my other half. I trust you more than anyone.”

“Remember those twins we met in the kingdom when we went with dad to the palace and trained with them, and they kicked our asses?”

I growled internally how could I not, We trained for 12 hours a day, and I could not beat them no matter what I did.

“Why are you bringing them up?”

“The hoodie she had on smelt like Nolan.”

I growled aloud, and my dad jumped up looking for danger, “Sorry Lennox was trying to remember where a scent he smelt came from... do you remember the twins we trained with at the palace and lost to

“Haha yes I do, you were so upset they kept catching your every move.”

“Lennox says she smelled like Nolan”

“I do not think Terri had a daughter. He was very fond of his children and would have brought her with, that would have been a month after his mate died to rogues so”

“Her mom was killed by rogues?!” “Yes, they tortured, raped and killed her.”

My head was spinning, “Dad I think I f****d up...”

“Why”

“The witch made our scent... rouges.”

My mother inhaled, “Maybe she’s Nolan's girlfriend. I mean your father is right, Terri was very fond of his children and wouldn't have left one in the pack to be gone for so long.”

“Son, you cannot change the past, but you can change the future.”

I growled at the thought of her being Nolan's girlfriend, but then I found out she was safe. “We need to find out more information about her.”

“Yes, I will send out PIs to investigate but, son, there may be things you find you won't like. You need to realize that now.”

I sighed, “Okay mom.”

“We love you and are happy you found her.”

I dismissed myself. Lennox wanted to go for a run. His chest hurt at the thought of her being with someone else. I leaped across the creak and Lennox took control. He loved the woods. He ran leaping over rocks and logs, pushing himself to not think of our feisty little wolf. As he jumped over a log, he saw a deer in the distance. I knew this meadow was his favorite one. It borders mine and Alpha Quinton's pack. I wonder if we should wait to go through it as Maddox could be right. Lennox perked his ears up to hear if anyone else was around us, but the animal. He heard nothing and started to stalk his pray. For him to be as big as he is, stealthey was his best friend. We were inches from the deer. He leaped and took the doe down, claiming his meal. He ripped through the meat and was enjoying his feast when he heard murmurs coming from the woods. He jumped behind the fallen log and landed flat to see who was coming through the meadow. They had no scent.

“Micah, are you sure we should continue with this plan? There is no way we can send her when she was just attacked this morning by rogues! She has not woken up yet? How will we sneak her away when Cohen is now watching her like a hawk? He cannot really think she is a target and that they will come back for her! She is a nobody! Useless! We need her to leave. This has ruined everything!”

“Kylie love everything will go as planned. I promise Darlin, this rogue attack will be the perfect way to get Oakley gone. Cohen is only watching her like a hawk as you were supposed to walk that trail that morning, and it would be you in that bed be thankful, he asked her to take your training shift, so you could study.”

I will NEVER be thankful to her! I f*****g hate her! She had better stay away from my brother no good.”

I stayed quiet, it took everything for Lennox to lay there and listen to the plan for... Oakley is our mate. She has a beautiful name. My heart rate spiked at the thought of our mate, and I had to even out my breathing. I did not want them to know I was here, whoever they were. I could hear them kissing and smell her arousal. God, this is gross.

“Tell me you are going to send her away, please Micah tells me. She does not deserve to be here! My dad should never have taken her in!”

“Baby, I promise after she heals, she will be gone, and you will never have to see her hideous face again. Axel might cause problems, but I know how to shut him up, so it will be no big deal. If your brother follows through on his side of the deal, we will be safe and able to do more. We also must stop Alpha Keane from snooping around our pack. No good Daddy's money boy.”

I held in my snort. If he only knew the real me, then he would know my dad made me train harder than any other alpha in the world. I was wondering what the alpha twins were planning to do? Where was my mate going? I needed to warn the king. I waited until they were too occupied with each other and slunk out of the meadow. I Mind-linked Maddox to meet me in my office as well as my father. We needed to inform the king and I needed to make it to the meeting with Alpha Quinton, so I could sneak and check on my mate. I licked her. She should be awake by now and almost recovered. Then Lennox spoke...

“I remember the taste of her blood, Keane; at the time, we were too caught up in her sounds and smell to notice right away... She had wolfsbane in her system. I was surprised she could fight that well and last as long as she did!”

“Maybe that’s why you can sense she’s our mate. Maybe someone is feeding her wolfsbane to keep her wolf dormant, but who would do that to her?”

I rushed back to my father’s office, which is now my office. I needed to have his Pi’s look into that as well. I walked through my office door and in stood my father Matthew, my Mother Ameila, my beta Maddox, My Gamma Derrick, My delta Anthony, and my Head Warrior Malachi...

“Perfect your all hear”

“OF course, are you summoning all of us Alpha, why wouldn't we come?” said my gamma.

“Well yall got your butts whooped by that girl--”

They all growled at my father, my mother and I tried to stifle a laugh, but it was no use their growls with their red faces, icing on the cake.

“Maddox, I need you to call the king. Lennox was running in the meadow when we stumbled upon Alpha Quinton's daughter and his head warrior and overheard a very interesting conversation that might give him what he needs to Investigate the Crescent Moon Pack.”

“Son, what did you hear?”

I looked around the room for a second, took in a long breath and as I let it out while locking gazes with Derrick, He shuddered as I spoke, “The girl you almost killed today is my mate. They were talking about her and how her being injured ruined their plans of selling her today and that The Alpha's son had better follow through with his plan or things wouldn’t work. Also, until just now I was wondering why they said she had not woken yet’ — Derrick gulped... ‘we tasted wolfsbane when we licked her and a lot of it like someone is trying to keep her wolf dormant.”

“How homopterous! Who would do that to someone?” My father said, enraged.

“I will have my Pi’s looked into more, but we will call the king. You should get going, or you will be late--”

My office phone rang as my father was uttering the last of his sentence. I walked to my desk and picked up the line.

“Riverside pack, Alpha Keane speaking.”

“Hi yes Alpha, this is Marie with The Crescent moon pack I am calling in regard to your meeting with Alpha Quintion. Today we will, unfortunately, have to reschedule...”

I heard a sniffle down the line, “That’s fine, is everything alright Maire?”

“No Alpha. Alpha Quintion is dead. He was attacked by rouges earlier today as well as one of our she-wolves. She has life-threatening injuries, but Alpha Cohen says he is monitoring her, and she is healing slowly, but Alpha Quinton was DOA.”

My eyes turned murderous. This was the plan they were taking their father out, so they could rule the pack.

“Thank you, Marie, Tell Alpha Cohen my condolences on his loss. Can you tell me any more information on this rogue attack?’ Everyone took a deep breath’

“I'm sorry, Alpha Keane, I cannot, as very much information has been released.”

“Can you tell me anything about the she-wolf who has life-threatening injuries? My heart stung as I said that.

“Let me pull up her records, let us see. She is a low-ranking wolf who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. She held her own but was unsuccessful and was injured very badly. She was an Orphan who Alpha Keane took to raise in the Pack house as his main servant. She is highly ranked in all her classes, she is the top student in shifting and combat even without her wolf and is 17, unmated, and has no family within the pack. That is all that is listed as her Alpha, so she was not of high rank, so we will not have to inform the king of her, but I will be calling the king of Alpha Quinton. I will call this week to reschedule the meeting. Goodbye, Alpha.”

I do not know when tears started escaping my eyes, but my mother leaned against me, taking them from my face. She was all alone. She needed me and I could not be there...

“Goodbye Marie”

I looked around the room and saw Derrick had dismissed himself. I looked at my Delta and headwarrier, and they had red eyes. I looked at my father, and he had red eyes.

“He is beating himself up, his duty is to protect his luna and even though she is not his luna, he feels as if he failed her.”

I bowed my head in understanding, we all take our jobs very seriously in the pack, so I know this may have killed him.

“Was that their plan? To kill their father and rule his pack? I wonder what else they will do” my father said.

I just shook my head. I felt defeated by all the events that have happened today, and I feel like a failure as I sit in my office worrying if my mate will live or die before I get to introduce myself to her.
