Sabrina Fry was known as a woman who hated the rich.
Five years ago, she was selling liquor at a private club when a bloated, greasy customer started harassing her. He threw several stacks of cash onto the floor and told her that if she got down on her knees and picked them up with her mouth, he would buy every bottle she had.
Sabrina refused to bend.
She grabbed a bottle and smashed it over his head.
Amid the startled screams, she tightened her grip around the jagged half of the bottle and pressed it against his neck. Her voice was cold as ice.
"You think money can buy anything? Then why don't we test that theory and see if it can buy your life back?"
That scene happened to be witnessed clearly by John Hayes, who was in the private room next door.
Everyone knew the head of the Hayes Family despised gold diggers.
Because his first love had taken the 10 million his mother offered her, broken up with him, and gone abroad.
But Sabrina, who refused to bow for money and was willing to fight to the bitter end, was nothing like that old flame of his.
And so, a marriage that sounded almost absurd was born.
Ignoring everyone's objections, John married this penniless liquor salesgirl who supposedly hated the rich.
During their four years of marriage, John took wife-doting to an almost outrageous level.
Diamonds, jewelry, mansions, supercars... the things ordinary people could only dream of were delivered to Sabrina in piles.
Unfortunately, he was throwing pearls before swine.
Sabrina never cared for any of it. The jewelry was locked away in a safe to gather dust. The supercar keys were tossed by the entrance like decoration. Even the top-tier mansion he had given her was a place where she insisted on living in the smallest, most inconspicuous guest room.
And the more Sabrina seemed to hate money, the deeper John loved her.
Just last week, John had given Sabrina another necklace worth nearly $1000,000.
The moment the necklace settled around Sabrina's neck, she said, "You know I hate these things the most. Besides, the safe is almost full. Stop buying them."
John merely smiled, wrapped his arms around her, kissed the top of her head, and said, "Then I'll get you a bigger safe."
If it had been before, Sabrina would have laughed and teased him.
But this time, she only lowered her eyes, hiding the brief flicker of mockery in them. She said nothing.
John had no idea that the cold, lifeless jewels in that safe had already turned into warm numbers in her bank account.
Four years of marriage had changed Sabrina in many ways. It had also made her see many things clearly.
For example, a man who claimed he only loved her could still turn around and hold another woman in his arms.
For example, love was the most illusory thing in the world. It was nowhere near as real as money held firmly in her own hands.
So after John repeatedly met in private with his returned first love, Lana Lang, and even arranged for her to join Hayes Corp as his assistant, Sabrina called John mother's, Helen Hayes.
"You've always wanted me to divorce him. Now, I can give you what you want."
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line before Helen's mocking voice came through.
"What? Finally tired of pretending? Fine. Name your price."
Sabrina gently rubbed the cold wedding ring on her finger. A faint smile curved her lips.
"Seven hundred million dollars."
Helen sneered over the phone. "You... As expected, you are no different from that woman. Fine. I agree. I'll have my lawyer bring you the divorce papers to sign. Take the money and the divorce papers, then never appear in front of my son again."
At the same time, rumors about John and Lana had already spread all over the city.
The upper-class circles now had a fresh scandal to savor over coffee and dinner.
Some people even started a betting pool, wagering on whether John and Sabrina would get divorced.
"I bet they won't divorce. Seventy thousand dollars!"
"Tsk. I bet they'll be divorced within a month. Didn't you see his first love come storming back? One hundred forty thousand!"
"I'm betting on divorce within a month too. After all, the mandatory waiting period is exactly thirty days. Two hundred eighty thousand!"
Just as the betting pool reached its peak, Sabrina appeared at the bar.
She wore a simple white cotton-linen dress and no makeup. Against the glittering, jewel-studded surroundings, she looked entirely out of place, yet she possessed a presence no one could ignore.
She walked straight to the betting table. Under everyone's stunned gaze, she placed a card lightly on the table.
"I bet we'll be divorced in one week. One point four million dollars."
Her voice was calm, and there was a smile in her eyes.
There were only seven days left before the date she had agreed on with Helen.
Seven days later, once her 700 million dollars arrived, she would leave everything behind and fly far away.
