When Sabrina returned home from the bar, the villa was empty. John still had not come back.
It was just past midnight when John finally opened the door and came in.
He walked into the living room carrying the coolness of the night with him. When he saw Sabrina still sitting on the sofa, he looked a little surprised.
"You're still awake?" he asked, tugging his tie loose. His voice was tinged with exhaustion.
Sabrina looked up at him, her face expressionless.
"Do you remember what day it is?"
John froze for a moment, then frowned and tried to think. Clearly, he had no idea.
"Things have been too hectic at the company lately. One business dinner after another. What day is it?"
"Our third wedding anniversary," Sabrina said calmly.
Only then did realization dawn on John's face, followed by a trace of embarrassment.
At that moment, the phone in his pocket buzzed.
He took it out, glanced at the screen, and hung up without hesitation.
The call came again, stubbornly ringing a second time. John hung up again, then simply switched the phone to silent and slipped it back into his pocket.
Sabrina's gaze moved from the pocket where he had put his phone back to him.
The custom-made suit jacket he had been wearing when he left that morning was gone. He was in only a shirt now. What stood out even more sharply was the obvious lipstick mark printed just above his collar.
With an apologetic smile, he walked over and wrapped an arm around Sabrina's shoulders.
"Honey, I'm sorry. This is my fault. The merger case at the company has been such a headache lately that I've been completely overwhelmed. I even forgot such an important day. My mistake. I'll make it up to you another day and prepare a gift for you too, all right?"
Sabrina did not pull away, nor did she respond. She simply let him hold her and looked at him calmly.
Seeing that she said nothing, John assumed she had been appeased. He rubbed his brow, deep fatigue settling over his face.
"I'm really exhausted today. I'm going upstairs to shower and rest. You should sleep early too."
After saying that, he almost could not wait to let go of her. He turned and headed for the stairs.
Sabrina saw him pull the phone from his pocket the instant he turned around. His fingers unlocked the screen quickly. With his head lowered, he typed as he walked upstairs, looking completely focused. It was nothing like the perfunctory way he had treated her just moments ago.
Sabrina did not need to guess who had been calling him again and again.
But now, none of that mattered to her anymore.
The next morning, Sabrina was woken by the ringing of her phone. It was John.
"Sabrina, I left a document in the study. It's in a manila envelope. Bring it to the company for me."
Sabrina listened in silence, then answered with two words.
"Got it."
She found the document, freshened up briefly, and drove to the company.
Sabrina pushed open the office door directly, only to stop in her tracks at the scene inside.
John was standing by the window, while Lana was almost pressed against his side. One of her hands rested intimately on his arm as she tilted her face up, smiling and talking to him.
At the sound of the door opening, both of them turned around at the same time.
A flicker of panic crossed John's face. He quickly, and somewhat unnaturally, pulled away from Lana.
Lana immediately restrained her smile, but the provocation in her eyes was practically overflowing.
"I brought the document." Sabrina looked away as if she had seen nothing and placed the envelope on the desk.
"Mm. Thank you." John walked behind the desk, picked up the document, and checked it. "Good timing. I have a meeting right away."
He glanced at Sabrina, then at Lana beside him. After a pause, he said, "Sabrina, wait for me for a bit. The meeting will be over soon. After that, we'll have lunch together."
Sabrina did not answer. She simply walked to the sofa and sat down, casually picking up a magazine to flip through.
John seemed to want to say something else, but his assistant had already come in to remind him that the meeting was starting.
He had no choice but to take the document and leave the office in a hurry.
In the spacious office, only Sabrina and Lana remained.
The moment John left, Lana dropped her act.
She walked gracefully to the seat across from Sabrina and sat down, a smug smile playing on her lips.
"You're quite skilled, Ms. Fry," she said softly, every word barbed. "You pretended to hate the rich for five years and had John completely wrapped around your finger. But no persona works forever. Now that I'm back, the woman he loves in the end is still me."
Sabrina kept flipping through the magazine without even lifting her eyes.
Seeing that she was unmoved, Lana leaned forward slightly and lowered her voice.
"Oh, right. That diamond necklace John gave you last time? It was a style I rejected first. Do you like it?"
She studied Sabrina's expression carefully, then continued showing off.
"And I heard yesterday was your wedding anniversary. But he spent the whole day with me. Because yesterday was also the day we got back together. Do you know what we did together all day? We..."
Slap.
Sabrina suddenly straightened and slapped Lana across the face.
Lana clutched her stinging cheek and stared at Sabrina in disbelief, tears quickly welling in her eyes.
"You actually dared to hit me!"
At that exact moment, the office door was pushed open.
John had returned from his meeting, and he happened to take in the entire scene.
His expression changed dramatically. He strode forward, pulled the tearful Lana behind him, and demanded loudly, "Sabrina! What the hell are you doing?!"
