đź“– Episode 10 - The Curse Awakens

734 Words
The fire still lingered in Ariana’s veins long after the council dispersed. Servants scurried away at the faintest flicker of her aura, and even the chandeliers above the hall hummed faintly as if frightened of her presence. She sat alone in the moonlit chamber Lucian had given her, her palms trembling. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw flames. Golden, merciless, endless flames. Her reflection in the mirror was no longer human. Her eyes glowed faintly amber, pupils slit like a predator’s. This isn’t me, she thought, panic curling in her chest. I’m losing myself. The door creaked open. Lucian entered, silent as a shadow, but the weight of his presence filled the room. He studied her with those unreadable golden eyes, his jaw tight. “You shouldn’t have done that,” he said finally, his voice sharp but laced with something deeper. Concern. Fear. Ariana rose to her feet, anger flaring with the fire still coursing through her. “What was I supposed to do? Let her humiliate me? Let them all call me weak?” “You don’t understand,” Lucian growled, stepping closer. “That power you awakened—it isn’t a gift. It’s a curse. It feeds on your emotions. The more you use it, the less of you remains.” Her chest tightened. She remembered Selene’s words, venomous and cold: When it consumes you, not even Lucian will be able to save you. “I felt it,” Ariana whispered. “It was like… the fire wanted me. Wanted to burn everything. And I—” She stopped, her voice trembling. “I wanted it too.” For a moment, silence stretched between them. Lucian’s hand twitched as though he wanted to reach for her, but he held back. His walls were as strong as ever. “You’re playing with forces older than any of us,” he said finally. “If you lose control, Ariana, I will have no choice but to…” His voice broke off. “But to what?” she pressed, stepping closer, her eyes searching his. “Kill me?” His gaze flickered, and in that tiny hesitation, she had her answer. The fire inside her surged again, wild and untamed. Ariana gasped, clutching her chest as heat exploded outward. The candles in the room flared to life, their flames bending toward her like they recognized their queen. Lucian swore and grabbed her shoulders, his grip iron-strong. “Breathe, Ariana! Focus! Do not let it take you.” Her vision blurred. Fire roared in her ears, drowning out everything. She felt herself slipping, falling into an abyss of endless heat. And then— She saw it. A vision, sharp and violent: a battlefield drowned in fire, Lucian on his knees, blood staining the earth. Her own hands aflame, her voice screaming as the world burned. “No!” she cried, stumbling back. The flames burst from her body, scorching the stone walls. The heat was suffocating. Lucian pulled her against him, wrapping his aura around her like a shield. His power clashed with hers, a storm of moonlight against fire. For a heartbeat, she thought they might both be consumed. But slowly, the flames receded, collapsing back into her trembling form. She sagged against him, gasping for breath. His arms tightened instinctively around her, though his jaw was clenched, his eyes dark with conflict. “Do you see now?” he whispered, his voice rough against her ear. “This is what Selene wanted. To force you into revealing the curse, to let it devour you.” Ariana pushed away from him weakly, her voice breaking. “If you’re so afraid of me, then why keep me here at all?” For the first time, his mask cracked. Pain flickered across his face, quickly buried beneath his usual control. “Because I cannot let you go.” Her breath caught. His words struck something deep, something dangerous inside her. But before she could answer, the sound of footsteps echoed in the corridor outside. A servant stumbled into the chamber, pale and trembling. “My Lord… Lady Selene… she’s summoned half the council to her quarters. She says she has proof—proof that the Luna carries the curse of the ancients.” Ariana’s stomach dropped. Lucian’s eyes hardened into cold steel. “Of course she did.” Selene’s trap had only begun. ---
