The ballroom was silent.
The echoes of Ariana’s outburst still shimmered in the air like silver fireflies. The shattered crystal from Selene’s necklace lay in fragments on the marble floor, each shard pulsing faintly before flickering out.
Vampires stood frozen, their usual arrogance replaced with unease. They had witnessed something forbidden, something whispered only in myths—the Luna Fire.
Ariana’s chest heaved as she tried to steady her breath. Her palms still glowed faintly, the silver light slowly fading. Fear and confusion tangled inside her. What had she just done?
Lucian stirred beside her, his body trembling as he forced himself upright. His crimson eyes flickered back to life, locking on Ariana. “You…” His voice cracked, raw from Selene’s spell. “What did you unleash?”
Ariana swallowed, her voice barely a whisper. “I—I don’t know.”
Selene, despite the burn marks along her arms, began to laugh. It was soft at first, then sharp and echoing. “Perfect,” she hissed, her eyes gleaming with madness. “The prophecy wasn’t just a story. The last Lunar heir stands before us.”
A ripple of shock passed through the gathered vampires. Whispers broke out—fearful, awed, greedy. Some bowed their heads, others clenched their fists, but all of them stared at Ariana as though she were both salvation and executioner.
Lucian growled, pulling Ariana closer, shielding her with his body. His voice cut through the murmurs like a blade. “Anyone who dares touch her… will answer to me.”
Selene tilted her head, smirking despite her wounds. “Always the protector, Lucian. But even you can’t protect her from destiny.”
With a flick of her wrist, shadows swirled around her form. The air grew heavy, cold, as if the night itself bent to her will. “The trap wasn’t meant to capture you, dear Ariana. It was meant to awaken you.”
Ariana’s pulse quickened. Her voice trembled, but her eyes didn’t leave Selene. “Why? Why me?”
Selene’s smile widened, sharp as glass. “Because your bloodline holds the power to end us all—or to rule us. And I…” Her eyes glowed like molten silver. “…intend to see which path you choose.”
With those words, she dissolved into shadows, vanishing before anyone could stop her.
The moment she was gone, chaos erupted. Some vampires dropped to one knee before Ariana, murmuring prayers as though she were divine. Others shouted in outrage, demanding her death before her power grew stronger.
Lucian raised his hand, and silence fell instantly. His voice carried the weight of command. “This court belongs to me. And she is mine. Anyone who questions it…” His fangs bared in a deadly smile. “…will not live to regret it.”
The threat was enough. The crowd lowered their eyes, though the tension still vibrated in the air.
Ariana, however, could barely breathe. Her hands shook as she clutched Lucian’s sleeve. “What’s happening to me? Why does Selene keep calling me the last Lunar heir?”
Lucian turned to her, his gaze conflicted—protective, but shadowed with something else. “Because it’s true.”
Ariana froze. “…What?”
Lucian’s jaw tightened. For the first time, the ruthless vampire lord looked almost… vulnerable. “You are not ordinary, Ariana. You never were. The Lunar blood runs in your veins. You are the last descendant of a dynasty that was slaughtered centuries ago. A dynasty powerful enough to burn vampires into ash with a single breath.”
Her vision blurred. The room tilted. She shook her head in disbelief. “No… no, that can’t be true. I’m just—just—”
“Human?” Lucian’s voice was soft now, a cruel tenderness in his tone. He brushed a strand of hair from her face, his touch burning against her trembling skin. “You are so much more than human. And now, the entire court knows it.”
Tears welled in Ariana’s eyes. The weight of his words crushed her chest. She wasn’t just trapped in a contract marriage anymore—she was trapped in a destiny she never asked for.
Suddenly, one of the vampire lords stepped forward, bowing deeply. “My lord,” he said, his voice trembling with eagerness. “If the prophecy is true… then the girl must be bound. Controlled. A Blood Oath would ensure her loyalty—”
“Enough.” Lucian’s voice was a growl. His hand tightened protectively around Ariana’s.
But Ariana looked up at him, her voice small yet desperate. “What’s… a Blood Oath?”
Lucian hesitated. His crimson eyes darkened. “It’s the most dangerous bond of all. A vow sealed with blood—binding your soul to another’s will. Once taken, it can never be broken.”
Ariana’s stomach dropped. She didn’t miss the way the lord’s eyes gleamed hungrily at her. Nor the way others nodded in agreement. They didn’t see her as a person. They saw her as a weapon.
Lucian’s arm tightened around her. His voice was deadly calm, but Ariana felt the storm beneath it. “Over my dead body.”
The vampires lowered their gazes again, but the hunger in their eyes didn’t fade.
Ariana clutched Lucian’s hand, her heart racing. For the first time, she realized she wasn’t just in danger because of Selene.
She was in danger because now, everyone wanted a piece of her.
And in the shadows where Selene had vanished, a faint whisper curled through the night:
The Luna Fire has awakened. Let the games begin.
