Time passes, even in Canberra when it has its fairy tale moment. All fairy tale moments end: this is inextricably linked to time passing. This particular fairy tale moment ended with dying days of the year. It ended as it had begun, with a dinner party.
It was a dinner party for four. Lil used it as an excuse to teach Kat just a few more of her favourite dishes. They made almond biscuits to go with the coffee, and eggplant and cheese pastries, and various fried snacks for Chanukah. There was bread and olives and there were round fried pastries that Lil insisted on calling rosquillas even though the others couldn’t pronounce the word. There were far too many chocolates. Lil took especial joy in bringing out roast eggs (served in halves with red vinegar and parsley dressing).
