Chapter Seven - Visible Damage

893 Words
By Monday morning, the bruise had darkened. Kai didn’t try to hide it. That was what unsettled Lena the most. He walked into Valen Heights Academy like nothing had happened - tailored black coat, hands in pockets, posture straight. The faint mark along his jawline wasn't dramatic, but it was visible enough to invite questions. No one asked. They never did. Instead, they watched. Lena stood near the staircase with Sienna when he entered. The hallway quieted subtly, like it always did when Kai Morelli appeared. Sienna noticed the bruise first. Her grip tightened slightly around the strap of her bag. "Did he get into a fight?" Lena didn’t answer. Because she knew. And knowing felt like crossing into territory, she wasn't meant to enter. Kai’s eyes scanned the corridor lazily - until they found her. There was no softness in his expression today. Only control. And something guarded. He didn't walk toward her. He didn't acknowledge her. He walked past. Like she wasn't there. The dismissal shouldn't have hurt. But it did. _ By lunchtime, whispers had evolved. "They fought at the party." Camille looked furious. "He was arguing with someone older." I heard Lena follwed him. Rumors were currency here. And Lena felt poorer by the minute. Sienna leaned forward across the cafeteria table. "What happened that night?" "Nothing." "That's not true." Lena looked down at her way. "It wasn't about me." Sienna's eyes sharpened. "It became about you the moment you followed him." The words landed heavier than intended. Before Lena could respond, Camille approached their table. Polished. Composed. Dangerous in the way only way-trained daughters of power could be. "Lena," Camille said smoothly. "A word?" Sienna straightened. "If it concerns her, it can concern me too." Camille smilled faintly. "It doesn't." Lena stood. Curiosity was her weakness. They walked toward the quieter edge of the cafeteria. Camille didn't waste time. "You misunderstood your position." Lena blinked once. "I don't believe I have one." "That's exactly the problem." Camille's tone remained calm - almost kind. "You think this is about romance." It isn't. Kai doesn't belong to himself. He belongs to something much larger. And you -her eyes flicked over Lena carefully, "are not built for the world." Heat rose in Lena's chest. "You don’t know what I'm built for." Camille tilted her head slightly. "I know how it ends." "And how is that?" "You get hurt. Publicly. Quietly removed. And he continues." There was no jealousy in Camille's voice. Only certainly. That scared Lena more. "You sound very confident." "I've known Kai since childhood." Camille replied. "I know how he survives." A pause. "He lets go first." The words struck something fragile inside Lena. Before she could respond, Camille stepped back. "This isn't a threat," she said softly. "It's advice." And then she walked away. _ Across campus, Kai stood near the courtyard fountain again. Two boys were laughing about something - about Lena. He didn't look amused. "She's not your type," one of them said casually. "Too soft." Kai's gaze turned cold. "And you," he said quietly. "Talk too much." Silence followed instantly. The message was clear. But Lena saw it. From across the courtyard. He defended her. Yet he wouldn't look at her. The contradiction hurt more than open cruelty. _ Later that afternoon, she found him alone in the east corridor. She hadn't planned to speak. But her feet carried her forward. "You're avoiding me." His response was immediate. "No." "You are." He looked at her now. Expression unreadable. "I'm protecting you." "From what?" "From being seen standing next to me." Her throat tightened. "That didn't seem to matter before." "Before," he said evenly. "You didn't see what you saw." The bruise. His father. The crack in his control. "You think I see you as weak," she said softly. "I think you don't understand what weakness costs." "And what does it cost?" "Everything." A beat passed. "You don't get to decide what I can handle." His jaw tightened. "This isn't about handling." "Then what is it?" For a moment - just a moment - the mask slipped. "It's about damage, " he said quietly. "You're not protecting me," she whispered. He stepped closer. "Yes, I am." "By pushing me away?" "Yes." The honesty stunned her. He wasn't being cruel on purpose. He was being cruel on purpose. For distance. And that hurt worse. "You don't get to choose for me," she said again. His eyes darkened. "If you stand next to me publicly now," he said slowly. "It becomes official." Official meant. Families. Business. Negotiations. Leverage. She understood. And still- "I don't care." That was reckless. And he knew it. "You should." "I don't." Silence stretched between them. Then, without thinking- Lena closed the distance. And stood beside him. Not touching. Not dramatic. Just visible. Students passing by noticed immediately. Whispers began before the moment was even complete. Kai's jaw flexed. "Maybe." "This is a mistake." "Maybe." "But it's mine." For the first time since the party- something almost like respect flickered in his eyes. Not for her obedience. For her defiance. He didn’t step away. He didn't claim her either. He simply stood there. Beside her. And that silent decision shifted the balance of power. Because now- It wasn't a rumor. It was real. From the second- floor balcony, Camille watched. And quietly made a call.
