CHAPTER 6: THE TRIAL OF THE ABOMINATION

Neutral territory. That’s what they called it. But there was nothing neutral about the Stone Circle. 7 thrones carved from black rock. 7 banners with 7 different wolves. And in the center, a platform made for executions. My hands were shaking. Xavier held them. Tight. “Look at me,” he said. “Not them.” I looked up. Black eyes. Possessive. Furious. “If they hurt you, I will kill every single one of them,” he whispered. “Contract or no contract.” “Don’t,” I whispered back. “We’re here to end this, not start a war.” The gates opened. The 6 Kings walked in. Marcus in the center. Damien to his right. And behind them... 200 wolves. Armed. Xavier didn’t let go of my hand. We walked to the center platform together. --- “Sit,” Marcus commanded. I sat on the cold stone. Xavier stood behind me like a wall. “The charge is simple,” Marcus said. His voice echoed. “Selena of the Crescent Pack. Accused of being an abomination. Accused of possessing magic that is not of the wolf. Accused of endangering all 7 territories.” “Guilty,” Damien said immediately. “She’s barren. She’s powerless. Now suddenly she’s throwing Kings across rooms? It’s witchcraft.” Murmurs. Growls. Xavier stepped forward. “She’s not an abomination. She’s my mate. Marked and claimed.” “Then you are a fool,” Marcus said. “The prophecy is clear. The girl with no wolf will bring ruin.” “The prophecy also says she will save us,” Xavier shot back. “Which one are you choosing to believe?” Marcus slammed his fist on the throne. “Enough! The trial will decide.” He turned to me. “Selena. Do you deny that you have no wolf?” I stood up. My legs were shaking but my voice was steady. “I do not deny it.” “Do you deny that you used unknown magic to attack Kings?” “I do not deny it.” “Then how do you plead?” Silence. 200 wolves. 6 Kings. 1 Alpha King behind me. All waiting. “Not guilty,” I said. Laughter. Damien threw his head back. “Not guilty? You just admitted it!” “I admitted what I am,” I said, louder. “I did not admit to being an abomination.” I looked at each King. “You call me barren. You call me broken. You called me worthless for 20 years. But when I showed power, suddenly I’m a threat? Which is it? Am I nothing, or am I too much?” More murmurs. Marcus’s face went red. “Guards! The trial will proceed with a test. If she is truly of the wolf, the Moon Stone will accept her. If not...” He gestured to the platform. A huge glowing stone sat there. Blue and silver. “The Moon Stone has judged omegas for 1000 years. Place your hand on it.” Xavier’s hand tightened on my shoulder. “No.” “Yes,” I said. I looked up at him. “I have to.” I walked to the stone alone. It was cold. It hummed. I placed my hand on it. Nothing. For 3 seconds. Nothing. Damien smirked. “See? Nothing. She’s—” Light. White light exploded from the stone. Not gold this time. White. Pure. It shot up into the sky and the full moon above us turned silver. The wolves howled. The Kings stood up. Marcus stumbled back. “Impossible...” The light faded. And in its place, on the stone, were words. Old language. Ancient. Xavier read them out loud. His voice was shaking. “‘When the barren bears light, the Kings shall fall. When the rejected is claimed, the curse shall break.’” Silence. Total silence. Then Marcus whispered, “The prophecy... it’s her.” --- “No,” Damien shouted. “This is a trick! She’s using dark magic!” He lunged at me. I didn’t even move. The light came back. It hit him and sent him flying 10 feet. He crashed into his throne. Xavier was in front of me in a second. Sword out. “Anyone else?” he growled. No one moved. Marcus sank back into his throne. He looked old. Defeated. “We were wrong,” he said quietly. “The girl with no wolf... she’s not the ruin. She’s the answer.” He looked at me. “The curse of the 7 Kings. It ends with you, doesn’t it?” I didn’t answer. I didn’t know. But the voice in my head whispered again: _You are the key._ Xavier helped me down from the platform. “Trial’s over,” he said. “She’s free. And if any of you come near her again—” “We won’t,” Marcus interrupted. “The council is dissolved. Effective immediately.” Just like that. 1000 years of rule. Gone. --- We didn’t talk on the way back. Not until we were in his room. Behind closed doors. Then Xavier pulled me to him and just held me. “You did it,” he whispered. “You ended it.” “I’m scared,” I admitted. “What if I can’t control it? What if I hurt someone?” “You won’t.” He kissed my hair. “Because you’re not a weapon, Selena. You’re a healer. Didn’t you feel it? The stone didn’t burn you. It healed you.” I thought about it. The warmth. The peace. “You’re right.” He pulled back and looked at me. Really looked. “There’s one more thing.” “What?” “The Seer’s other prophecy. About children.” His hand went to my stomach. “Is it true? Can you—” I shook my head. “I don’t know. But...” I took his hand and placed it on my stomach. “I’m not afraid anymore. Whatever happens. With you.” His eyes went dark. “Selena.” “Yes?” “Marry me.” I blinked. “What?” “Marry me. Not because of prophecy. Not because of Kings. Because I want you. Every day. For the rest of our lives.” Tears filled my eyes. “Yes,” I whispered. “Yes, I will.” He kissed me then. Not desperate like before. Soft. Reverent. Like I was something precious. --- The wedding was 3 days later. Small. Just us. The Seer. And the 6 former Kings. They came to apologize. To swear loyalty. I wore white. Not black. And when Xavier put the crown on my head, it wasn’t a crown of thorns. It was silver. With 7 small stars. “Luna of the Black Moon Kingdom,” the priest announced. “Luna of all 7 territories,” Marcus added, kneeling. Me. The girl with no wolf. Luna. That night, in our room, Xavier traced the mark on my wrist. “Do you regret it?” he asked. “Claiming me? All the war?” I shook my head. “I regret the 20 years I wasted believing I was nothing.” He smiled. “You were never nothing.” He pulled me into bed and wrapped his arms around me. “Tell me something,” he murmured. “What?” “What did the voice say to you? In the chapel?” I was quiet for a long time. Then I whispered, “It said: Sing, O barren. The time of your sorrow is over.” Xavier went still. Then he pulled me closer. “Then we better start singing,” he said. --- One month later. I was in the garden. Planting flowers. Something I’d never been allowed to do before. The Seer came to visit. She sat next to me on the bench. “How are you, child?” “Happy,” I said honestly. “For the first time.” “Good.” She took my hand. “And the light? Can you control it now?” I nodded. I held out my hand and a small ball of white light appeared. It didn’t hurt. It warmed. “I use it to heal the injured wolves. From the war.” “The Kings are going to love that.” She cackled. “You turned them all into nurses.” We both laughed. Then she got serious. “The last part of the prophecy, child.” “What?” “The children.” My face went red. “We’re... we’re trying.” The Seer smiled. “You will have them. Many. And they will have golden eyes. And they will rule after you.” She patted my hand. “The barren shall have many, just as it was written.” I looked down at my stomach. Still flat. But for the first time, I believed. --- That night, I woke up sick. Xavier was instantly awake. “What is it?” “I don’t know. My stomach—” The healer came. An old she-wolf. She checked me. Then she smiled. “Congratulations, Your Majesty.” “On what?” “You’re with child.” The room went silent. Xavier dropped to his knees in front of me. “Really?” The healer nodded. “2 months. Maybe more.” Xavier started laughing. Then crying. He pressed his face to my stomach. “You did it,” he whispered. “You beautiful, impossible woman. You did it.” I touched his hair. “We did it,” I whispered. Outside, the moon was full. But it wasn’t red. It was silver. And for the first time in 1000 years, the Black Moon Kingdom was at peace. --- Epilogue: 9 Months Later The palace was loud. Not with war. With crying. A baby. Twin babies. Golden eyes. Just like the Seer said. Xavier held one. I held the other. “The girl,” he said. “We’ll name her Hope.” “And the boy?” I asked. “Light,” he said. “Because he came after the darkness.” Marcus, now our advisor, came in. “The territories request an audience with the new heirs.” Xavier looked at me. “What do you think, Luna?” I smiled. “Let them come. It’s time the world met the children of the barren.” The doors opened. 200 wolves. 6 Kings. All kneeling. And in the center, us. A King. A Luna with no wolf. And two babies. The prophecy was complete. The curse was broken. And the girl who was once rejected... Was now the reason an entire kingdom was reborn
