Chapter 2 - Lucy

685 Words
I entered the pack house and went straight to the alpha's office. I habitually come to the meeting exactly 10 minutes early. To eavesdrop, mainly. Today was no exception. Honestly, the old man should’ve learned the lesson. “But Alpha, it’s a suicide mission. Don’t you want to send a couple of guys there? If they can’t do it quietly, they at least can fight their way back,” Beta James, man I called my uncle voice held true concern, but I heard my father’s scoff before he could do it. "No. Let the Fox do it." Alpha’s commanding voice spit my name like it was polluting his mouth. "She will either do it or die trying. The b***h is a headache anyway.” That’s daddy dearest for you. "But Alpha, she's your daughter! Don’t make the same mistake twice!" "I'm aware, James! Don't forget who you are talking to." Uncle James remained quiet after that. He was always too caring about my safety. The man had no kids of his own, and he just couldn’t believe that my father didn't appreciate one of his. My father always said that his Beta would die because of his soft heart. I don’t agree with anything my father says, but I actually have to agree with this one. Emotions make you weak. Logic and power keep you alive. Damn. When I think of it, I do agree with my father on many issues. He cannot ever find out. I decided to clear my throat to let them know I was there. I arrived without a noise and hid my scent so they didn't understand I was there. Both Beta James and my father jumped in their seats. So much for old wolves. "I told you not to sneak in my office, Lucy!" The blotched red face of the man that I shared genes with satisfied me more than was normal. Today might not be so bad after all. "Sorry. Old habit," I shrugged. "What's the mission?" I wanted out of this place and never expected pleasantries from my father, so getting to the point was the only way to come here. Beta James was still holding on to his chest, catching his breath. I looked him over, and damn, I must have lost sense of time as the man tipped to the side of more gray hair than black. I smiled at him, and after a few beats, he smiled back. I liked the old mut. He was like a good cop to my father's meaner side. Still a formidable wolf, Beta James was a beast in the ring. He was sent out to serve in the military and returned with a few little scars and a bunch of medals. He was the sole reason I was so good at what I do. "It's an assassination. Alpha of the Blue Moon pack. It will be challenging, so go get the guns from the basement. You need to kill him before his mating ritual with his Luna, which will happen next Saturday on the red moon." He passes me the file with the target's info. I nod and keep standing. "Anything else?" "It will be dangerous. He is one of the strongest Alpha out there, so you have to be smart. Don’t make stupid mistakes." My father doesn’t even try to contain his smirk. He truly believes this is going to be my last mission on earth. Well, he is sort of right. "Roger that," I nodded again and left the office. These kinds of interactions are the only communication I have with my father. I think I remind him of my mother. Everybody says I look just like her, so if I spend more than 10 minutes in the same room with Daddy dearest, he gets angry and blames me for everything bad that ever happened to him. I go around the corner, quickly strain my ears for anybody around me, and put my fist into my mouth; I scream and trample my feet in quick succession. I cannot believe my luck. Goddess f*****g damn it, finally.
