Ethan parked his car in the driveway, his thoughts still tangled after the day’s whirlwind events. As he unlocked the door to his modest home, he was greeted by the scent of his mother’s cooking and the familiar hum of his sister’s laughter from the living room. For a brief moment, he felt the tension of his day ease.
But that peace shattered as soon as he walked inside. Sitting on the couch, wearing an exaggerated smile, was none other than his blind date, Amanda.
“Ethan! You’re back,” she greeted, her voice dripping with a sweetness that felt anything but genuine.
“What are you doing here?” Ethan asked, surprised.
Amanda gestured to the gifts neatly placed on the coffee table—luxury-brand shopping bags and a bouquet of expensive roses. “I thought I’d stop by and make up for how our first meeting went. You know, a fresh start.”
Ethan raised an eyebrow, skeptical of her sudden change in demeanor. Before he could respond, his mother, Rose, appeared from the kitchen, beaming.
“Amanda has been telling us about your date,” Rose said warmly. “She seems like a lovely girl.”
Ethan’s stomach turned. He hadn’t yet explained to his family the events of the day—or the life-changing decision he’d made.
“Yeah,” Ethan replied vaguely, his tone flat.
Amanda, however, took the opportunity to speak. “Oh, Mrs. Williams, Ethan was so charming. I could tell right away he’s the type of man who’d do anything for the woman he loves.”
Ethan resisted the urge to roll his eyes. The blind date had been a disaster, but Amanda was now spinning a completely different narrative.
“Why don’t you stay for dinner, Amanda?” Rose offered, clasping her hands together.
“I’d love to,” Amanda said with a saccharine smile.

The conversation took a sharp turn after dinner. While they were seated around the dining table, Rose mentioned the watch Ethan had received earlier in the day.
“It’s not every day someone gets a gift worth tens of millions,” Rose said, her voice full of pride.
Amanda’s smile froze. “What gift?”
Rose explained, oblivious to Amanda’s growing irritation. Ethan watched as Amanda’s expression shifted from confusion to disbelief.
“You… returned it?” Amanda asked, her tone incredulous.
Ethan nodded. “It wasn’t mine to keep.”
Amanda scoffed, her polite façade crumbling. “Are you out of your mind? A gift like that could have changed your life! Do you even understand its value?”
Ethan’s mother frowned, clearly uncomfortable with Amanda’s tone, while his younger sister, Mia, looked annoyed.
“It’s not about the money,” Ethan replied calmly. “I’m not interested in being bought.”
Amanda laughed mockingly. “Of course, you’re not. People like you don’t even know how to dream big.”
Ethan leaned back, unfazed. “If material things are what matter to you, Amanda, then I think it’s clear we’re not a good match.”
Amanda stood abruptly, her chair scraping against the floor. “You’re impossible. No wonder you’re still stuck in such a low-paying job. Let’s see if you’ll ever find someone better than me.”
Before anyone could react, Amanda stormed out, slamming the door behind her.
Silence filled the room as Rose turned to Ethan, concern etched on her face.
“Ethan, what’s going on? First, that girl, and now this gift business. Is there something you’re not telling us?”
Ethan took a deep breath. He had been dreading this conversation, but there was no avoiding it now. “Actually… there’s something I need to share with you.”
Both Rose and Mia leaned forward, their curiosity piqued.
“I’m married,” Ethan said, his voice steady.
The room erupted in a mix of gasps and questions.
“What do you mean you’re married?” Rose asked, her eyes wide. “When did this happen? And to who?”
Ethan pulled out the marriage certificate from his bag, placing it on the table. His mother and sister examined it, their jaws dropping when they saw the photo of Sophia.
“She’s beautiful,” Mia said, her voice filled with awe. “But who is she? You’ve never mentioned her before.”
Ethan hesitated before crafting a believable story. “Her name is Sophia. We met while I was serving in the military. We’ve been in love for years, but we kept it a secret because of her family’s influence. They wanted her to marry someone else.”
Rose’s eyes softened, a mix of pride and sentiment in her expression. “You married for love,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “Ethan, why didn’t you tell us sooner?”
Ethan shrugged, feigning shyness. “It all happened so fast. And her family isn’t exactly… ordinary.”
“What does she do?” Rose pressed.
“She’s a senior executive at a large company,” Ethan replied, carefully skirting around the truth.
Rose beamed, her earlier concerns replaced with joy. “You’ve made me so happy, Ethan. I’ve always prayed for you to find someone special.”
“Can we meet her?” Mia asked eagerly.
Ethan froze, knowing this would be a challenge. “She’s very busy with work right now, but I’ll see what I can do.”
Rose nodded, satisfied for the moment. “Take your time, but make sure to bring her around soon. She’s family now.”
Later that night, Ethan sat in his room, staring at his phone. He hadn’t told Sophia about the lie he’d told his family, and he wasn’t sure how she would react. After all, their marriage was nothing more than a business arrangement.
But before he could overthink, his phone buzzed. It was a message from Sophia:
"Are you free tomorrow? I need you to attend a business dinner with me. Bring something formal."
Ethan sighed, running a hand through his hair. The web of complications he was caught in was growing larger by the day.
The next morning, Ethan woke up to find a sleek black car parked outside his house. A well-dressed man stepped out and handed him an envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note from Sophia:
"Don’t be late. And remember, you’re my husband now. Play your part well."
As Ethan glanced at the car again, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he was being pulled into a world far beyond his control.
