A CHANCE ENCOUNTER

The café was abuzz with the soft murmur of conversations, clinking coffee cups, and the occasional laugh from nearby tables. Sophia Bennett sat near the large window, her fingers idly tracing the rim of her untouched latte. Her striking beauty made heads turn—long waves of dark hair, an elegant white dress that complemented her flawless complexion, and an air of quiet confidence. She, however, paid little attention to her surroundings. Her focus was on her phone, pressed firmly against her ear. “Sophia, this is not a request,” her grandfather’s voice rang with authority on the other end of the line. Maxwell Bennett was not only the head of the nation’s wealthiest family but also a man whose word was law in their household. “You’ve had enough time to ‘find yourself,’ as you like to put it,” he continued, his tone colder than usual. “The board is losing faith in our stability. A single heiress without a husband is seen as weak, unfit to carry the legacy. You must marry, Sophia. And soon.” Sophia’s heart sank. “Grandfather, isn’t it enough that I’ve dedicated my life to learning the business? Why must marriage be the deciding factor?” “Reputation and stability,” he replied curtly. “This family is built on alliances. Without them, we risk everything. If you don’t find someone, I will have no choice but to arrange a marriage for you.” Sophia froze. She knew exactly what he meant. Her grandfather had long hinted at a merger with the Carters, another powerful family, through marriage to their son, Richard—a man Sophia could barely tolerate. “I’ll handle it,” she said finally, her voice steely. “You have three months, Sophia. Don’t waste my time.” The call ended abruptly. Sophia sighed, setting her phone on the table. She felt trapped, like a pawn in a game she never chose to play. Just then, the bell above the café door jingled, announcing a new arrival. Ethan Carter stepped in, his tall frame filling the doorway. His sharp eyes scanned the room until they landed on Sophia. There she is, he thought. White dress, sitting by the window—just like Anna described. Ethan straightened his jacket and approached her table, his footsteps steady and purposeful. He wasn’t sure what to expect from a blind date, but the woman before him far exceeded his imagination. She was stunning, exuding a grace he found both intimidating and captivating. “Excuse me,” he said, his voice deep yet gentle. Sophia looked up, startled. She was still lost in thought, her mind swirling with her grandfather’s ultimatum. “Yes?” she asked, her tone more curt than intended. Ethan smiled, unfazed. “I’m Ethan Carter. I believe we’re supposed to meet today?” Sophia blinked, confused. “I’m sorry, but I think you have the wrong person.” Ethan hesitated, his confidence faltering. “You’re… not Anna’s friend?” “No,” Sophia replied firmly. “I’m definitely not.” Ethan’s cheeks flushed red. He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. “My apologies. I must’ve mistaken you for someone else.” Sophia wanted to dismiss him outright, but something about him made her pause. He wasn’t like the polished, calculating men she often met at business events. There was an earnestness in his expression, a warmth that felt rare in her world. Before she could say anything, he added, “You know, I don’t usually embarrass myself like this. But if it’s any consolation, you’re probably the most beautiful mistake I’ve ever made.” Sophia raised an eyebrow, a small smirk playing on her lips. “Flattery won’t get you far, Mr. Carter.” Ethan chuckled, relieved she wasn’t offended. “Noted.” He extended his hand. “Well, since I’ve already made a fool of myself, I might as well introduce myself properly. I’m Ethan. Former soldier, now working as a gynecology nurse. And you are?” Sophia hesitated. Her grandfather’s words echoed in her mind. She wasn’t in the mood to entertain small talk, but something about Ethan’s sincerity intrigued her. Against her better judgment, she shook his hand. “Sophia Bennett.” The name struck Ethan like a lightning bolt. He stared at her, trying to process the revelation. “Bennett… as in the Bennett family?” “Yes,” she said simply, her voice cool. She was used to this reaction. Ethan pulled his hand back, suddenly feeling out of place. He was just a nurse from a modest background. What was he doing chatting with someone like her? “Well, it’s been a pleasure,” he said quickly, standing up. “I’ll get out of your way now. Sorry again for the mistake.” Sophia watched him, amused by his sudden retreat. “Ethan, wait.” He paused, looking back at her. “For someone who barges into a stranger’s day, you leave rather quickly,” she teased. Ethan smiled sheepishly. “Just trying not to overstay my welcome.” Before Sophia could reply, a deep voice interrupted them. “Sophia, who’s this young man?” Both turned to see an elderly man standing a few feet away, his sharp gaze fixed on Ethan. It was Maxwell Bennett. “Grandfather,” Sophia said, her voice tinged with surprise. Ethan stood frozen, unsure of what to do. Maxwell’s presence was imposing, his tailored suit and polished demeanor exuding power. “This is Ethan,” Sophia said, glancing at Ethan as if testing his reaction. “We were just… talking.” Maxwell’s eyes narrowed, assessing the young man. “Ethan, is it? And what do you do?” Ethan cleared his throat, suddenly feeling like he was being interrogated. “I’m a nurse, sir. Obstetrics.” Maxwell raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised. “A nurse? Interesting.” Sophia braced herself, expecting her grandfather to dismiss Ethan outright. But instead, a small, almost imperceptible smile crossed his face. “Well, Ethan,” Maxwell said, his tone softening slightly, “it seems you’ve managed to hold my granddaughter’s attention longer than most. That’s no small feat.” Sophia frowned, unsure where this was going. Ethan looked equally puzzled. “I’ll leave you two to your conversation,” Maxwell said, turning to Sophia. “But remember, time is of the essence.” With that, he walked away, leaving an air of mystery in his wake. Sophia felt a chill run down her spine. Her grandfather was not one to waste words. Whatever he was thinking, it couldn’t be good. Ethan broke the silence. “Well, that was… intense.” “You have no idea,” Sophia muttered. As Ethan glanced at his watch, he realized he was running late. “I should really go. Sorry again for the confusion. It was nice meeting you, Sophia.” Before she could respond, Ethan hurried out of the café. Sophia stared after him, her thoughts a whirlwind. She barely noticed her phone buzzing until she saw her grandfather’s name on the screen. “What was that about?” she asked, answering the call. “I like him,” Maxwell said without preamble. Sophia’s heart skipped a beat. “What?” “Ethan,” her grandfather said. “He’s different. Genuine. You were actually… patient with him. That’s rare for you, Sophia.” “What are you getting at?” Maxwell’s voice turned cold. “I think he might be the solution to your little problem. If you don’t choose him, I will ensure your union with Richard Carter proceeds as planned.” The line went dead. Sophia sat frozen in her chair, her grandfather’s words ringing in her ears. She had a choice to make—and it felt like the walls were closing in around her. Will Sophia consider Ethan as her potential escape from Richard, or will she reject her grandfather’s scheme entirely? Her next move could change her life forever.
