Chapter 2: Shadows in the Glass

1012 Words
The first week flew by in a blur of reports, coffee runs, calendar updates, and endless emails. Lina Evans, now officially Damian Blackstone’s assistant, had never worked so hard in her life. But she didn’t mind. Not really. The work kept her focused, kept her thoughts from spiraling. Especially when Damian’s mysterious stares lingered too long, or when the silence in the office seemed heavier than it should. By Friday morning, she had already memorized his schedule, preferences, and moods—or at least she thought she had. She’d learned that Damian liked his coffee black, meetings to the point, and people to be either competent or invisible. Lina wasn’t sure which category she fell into. She was organizing his files when he emerged from his office. "Cancel my 2 p.m. with Montgomery," he said without looking at her. "Yes, sir." He paused. "And call Jeremy Keller. I want a meeting set by Monday." "Right away." He turned and walked back into his office, the glass door closing behind him with a quiet hiss. Lina caught a glimpse of him loosening his tie slightly as he moved to the window. Once he was out of view, she slumped into her chair and let out a slow breath. The tension of working so close to someone like Damian was... exhausting. He was a storm in a tailored suit. Brilliant, cold, commanding. And frustratingly unreadable. Still, part of her was fascinated. That afternoon, she was asked to deliver a set of documents to a locked archive room two floors below. Melanie handed her the keycard and a warning. "You’ll need to log your entry. Use the red file drawer. Only that. Nothing else. Understand?" Lina nodded, confused but compliant. "Of course." The archive room was chilled, dimly lit, and smelled faintly of dust and leather. Rows of locked drawers lined the walls. She found the red drawer easily, inserted the files, and began logging her visit on the terminal. Then she saw it. A loose folder slightly wedged beneath the drawer next to hers. It looked like it had fallen from somewhere. Instinctively, she reached for it. Her fingers brushed the edge—and the name on the label stopped her heart. "Evans. Lina. Confidential." She stared, stunned. What the hell? Before she could open it, footsteps echoed in the corridor. She shoved the folder back and shut the drawer just as the door opened. Melanie. Her eyes narrowed. "You were taking a while. Everything alright?" Lina nodded quickly, forcing a smile. "Yeah. Just got confused with the log-in system." Melanie didn't smile back. "Let’s go." Back at her desk, Lina couldn’t focus. Why would a file on her even exist in a place like that? And why marked as confidential? Something wasn’t right. She could feel it. That night, she lay in bed staring at the ceiling of her tiny apartment. Her phone buzzed with a message from her roommate. Ava: You still alive at that fancy job? 😏 Lina: Barely. My boss might be a cyborg. Ava: Oooo is he hot tho??? Lina: Unfortunately, yes. Tall, dark, broody. The whole tragic billionaire package. Ava: LUCKY. Spill everything tomorrow brunch? Lina: I’ll try. If I don’t disappear first. 👀 She tossed the phone aside. Despite her joke, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched. Not just at work. Everywhere. The next morning at brunch, Ava stared at her over a latte. "You look like you haven’t slept in days." "Because I haven’t. This job... it’s not just intense. It’s weird." "Weird how?" Lina hesitated. Could she really explain what she saw? What she felt? "I think... there’s something going on at Blackstone. Something hidden. And I think I’m part of it." Ava blinked. "Like... what? A scandal? Corruption?" "I don’t know. But I found a file. With my name on it. In a confidential archive." Ava gasped. "Lina! That sounds serious. Maybe even illegal. Are you in danger?" Lina shrugged helplessly. "I don’t know yet." Back at Blackstone on Monday, the tension escalated. Damian had a rare visitor that day—his adopted brother, Elias. Lina had never met him, but had heard whispers. Elias Blackstone was everything Damian wasn’t. Warm. Charismatic. Easy to like. Where Damian was steel, Elias was sunlight. He arrived just after noon, strolling in like he owned the place. "You must be Lina," he said with a grin. She stood, surprised. "Yes. And you’re—" "Elias. Damian’s lesser half." She laughed despite herself. There was something instantly disarming about him. "He’s in a meeting, but I’ll let him know you’re here." "Take your time. I came early to meet the mysterious assistant everyone’s been talking about." Lina blushed. "I doubt anyone’s talking." "They are now." He leaned against her desk, his smile fading slightly. "You should be careful here, Lina. This place isn’t always what it seems." She looked up sharply. "What do you mean?" Before he could answer, Damian’s door opened. "Elias." The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees. "Brother," Elias said smoothly. "You’re as charming as ever." "Inside. Now." Elias gave Lina a wink before disappearing into the office. The door shut with finality. Lina sat down, pulse racing. What did Elias mean by that warning? Inside, voices rose in sharp bursts. "You shouldn’t have come here." "I had to. She deserves to know." "It’s not the time. Not yet." "Damian, you’ve kept this secret long enough. She’s going to find out—" Then silence. Lina leaned closer, but the thick glass muted the rest. She sat back, dizzy. She had no idea what was happening. But somehow, it all revolved around her. And she wasn’t sure she was ready for the truth. From behind his desk, Damian stared out the window long after Elias left. He was losing control. Too many pieces shifting. He thought he had more time. But now... now he’d have to make a choice. Tell her the truth. Or protect her from it. Even if it broke her. Even if it broke him.
