I don’t know if it was planned, but as I stepped out of the boardroom, there was Nathan waiting by the door. “This way, Mrs. Voss,” he said, and I followed behind him. We walked through the familiar walls, the same faces, and curious eyes. The hallway leading to the general manager’s office was the same, every vase still in its place. For two years, I had waited on a man who was never mine. There were times I stayed in the car as he claimed it wasn’t safe to come in. Under the cold weather, I sat, and no matter how long he stayed, I dared not doze off. I was his driver, his adviser, and his project manager.
