Lucas
After dropping Aubrey off, I asked my driver to take me home. Once inside, I took off my clothes and just lay in bed thinking about Aubrey.
I don't know why I am so interested in her. But she hates me. I can see it in her eyes. She is the only girl I have ever come across who doesn't want to have anything to do with me and that bothers me.
My phone rings and I check to see who is calling. It is Mark.
“How can I help you?”
“I thought you said she wasn't pretty.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I'm looking at pictures of you and your wife-to-be. You both look beautiful. She is more beautiful though.”
“These press people are really fast.”
“Yeah. So when is she moving in?”
“Tomorrow.”
“Okay… can’t wait to see her in person.”
“Get off my phone, Mark,” I end the call.
I opened i********: and I saw pictures of Aubrey and me and I smiled. We looked good, she looked stunning. It was hard to keep my eyes off her, but I had to.
What's happening to me? I have never been interested in any woman. But Aubrey makes me want to know everything about her. I forced myself to sleep. Tomorrow she'll be at my house.
I woke up feeling…. Happy? Maybe it was because Aubrey was moving in today. Who knows?
I take my shower and get dressed. I head downstairs to eat, and after eating, I go around the house to inspect everything.
I checked the room she would be staying in. It is directly opposite mine. After checking everything, I decided to give her a call.
“Hello”
“Please who?”
She didn't save my number. Great.
“Your husband-to-be.”
“Oh, Lucas. Good morning.”
“Good morning. I just wanted to let you know my driver would be at your place to pick you up by noon.”
“Okay, thank you. Are you allergic to dogs?”
I'm not allergic to dogs, but I'm not a fan of them.
“No. I'm not. Why are you asking?”
“I always wanted a dog, but my mom was allergic, so we couldn't have one.”
“Oh,” I said, trying to picture her with a puppy.
“Yeah. Anyway, see you soon.”
She hung up.
It felt nice that we had some kind of conversation. I called my driver and instructed him to be at Aubrey's place at noon to pick her up.
I spent the rest of my morning working. I have a new project that I'm starting on, and I try to stay focused on my work, but my mind keeps wandering back to Aubrey. I wonder what it would be like to live under the same roof as her. I hope we will be able to co-exist.
At 12:30 pm, my driver arrived at my house with Aubrey. I watched as she stepped down from the car and looked around to take in the environment. She looked so beautiful in her flowery sundress. She packed her hair in a loose ponytail. She looked simple but stunning.
She tried to carry her box, but my driver stopped her and showed her the way in. I looked at myself in the mirror and released a deep breath. I don't know why I was nervous. I have never been nervous when it comes to women, but with Aubrey it is different.
When I got downstairs, I saw her looking at some pictures in the sitting room.
“Hi, welcome.”
“Hey. "You have a beautiful house,” she replied, giving me a friendly smile.
“Thanks. Let me show you to your room.”
I took her upstairs to show her to her room. She steps in and takes in the view.
“This is lovely. Thank you.”
“No worries. I’ll let you settle in. Dinner’s at 7 pm. Are you allergic to anything?”
“Yeah. I'm allergic to nuts.”
I take a mental note.
“Alright.”
As I headed downstairs, I went to inform the chef about Aubrey's allergy and warn them not to ever include anything containing nuts.
The day dragged on.
I found myself glancing at my watch. Eager for 7 pm to arrive so that I could have dinner with Aubrey. I had been in my study all day, working and trying not to overthink the fact that Aubrey now stays with me.
Maria, my cook, came to my studies to let me know that dinner was ready. I told her I'd be down in a minute. I quickly changed my clothes into a more casual look. I wear a body-hug white T-shirt and loose gray sweatpants. I look at myself in the mirror once more before going downstairs.
At the dinner table, I await Aubrey before I start eating. She comes down 2 minutes later. She apologizes for her lateness. I don't even mind as I continue to admire her. And we start eating in a comfortable silence.
“Your cook is superb. The food is amazing.”
“Thank you. Do you cook?”
“I do. I attended culinary school,” she says, like it's no big deal.
“That's nice. I’d love to try your cooking someday.”
“We’ve got four years for that,” she says with a tone of sarcasm.
I look at her. Her eyes look so tired, like they hold so much sadness, and it's weighing her down.
“Look… I don't want this to be some type of punishment, that's why I am trying to make it possible for us to be friends.”
She looks at me for a while and then gives me a faint smile.
“So…when are we announcing our engagement?” she asks, changing the topic completely.
“We can let them know by next week.”
She nods.
“So we need to take some engagement pictures.”
“Yeah. Makes it more believable.”
“Alright, just let me know when you’ve picked a date for the pictures.”
“Sure.”
“Thanks for dinner,” she says, standing up.
“Goodnight Lucas.”
“Goodnight Aubrey.”
And with that, she headed upstairs. I couldn’t help but think…maybe this would work after all.
