Chapter 6

EVANGELINE I let out a sigh of relief after I was done with the last patient. “You look exhausted,” Millie, one of the nurses said. I could barely manage out a nod as I lowered myself into the chair next to me. The pack hospital was busier than usual today. The snow poured heavily this morning, catching people off guard. We didn’t get more than a few inches on a good day, but today, people were walking ankle deep in snow. There were so many accidents and cases of young kids who hadn’t gotten their wolf yet, catching the flu. “Here,” Millie handed me a bottle of water. “Thank you,” I mumbled, draining the entire bottle in one gulp. “You should head home, Millie. I hear the snow will only get worse tonight.” She grabbed her coat and pulled it over her shoulders. “You should too.” “I will, I’m just waiting for my husband,” I glanced over at the clock. Alexander knew what time I got off work. He should’ve been here by now, but once again, he’d shown that I wasn’t a priority and was late. Millie opened her mouth, as if she wanted to say something, but at the last minute, she decided against it, turned on her heels and left. I watched her disappear through the double doors and sighed deeply. Alex’s car pulled into the driveway almost fifteen minutes later, and as I dragged myself out of the doors, he horned loudly. I bit back a rude retort and hurried into the car where he was waiting with a frown. “Why weren’t you waiting outside?” I shot him a disbelieving look. “It’s snowing, Alex. I couldn’t stand outside.” He ran his eyes over my outfit. I’d changed out of my scrubs into a pair of leggings and a simple crop top. It wasn’t ideal for the cold weather, but it wasn’t snowing so hard when I left the house. I didn’t have the chance to grab a jacket. “Did you open my gift?” I asked, causing him to look away from my clothes. “What gift?” I frowned. “The gift box I gave you earlier.” Understanding flashed in his eyes. “I’ve been busy, Evangeline. I don’t just sit around doing nothing.” I chewed on the inside of my cheek to stop myself from saying anything. I’d only have to deal with his attitude for a little while longer. As soon as he opened the gift, he’d receive the divorce papers. I couldn’t wait to see the expression on his face once he realized. I could only imagine the anger- Alex’s phone rang, filling up the small space with noise. He picked it up instantly and because of our proximity, I could hear exactly what the other person was saying. “We found her, Alpha,” the person on the other end said. “Well? Where is she?” Alex spat. There was silence for a minute. “She’s on a date.” A feral grown left Alex’s lips and I knew without a doubt that she in question was Margaret. There was no one else that would get him so worked up. “Stop the car!” Alex yelled out and the car cae to a screeching stop. He turned to me. “Get out.” I froze for a moment. “Excuse me?” “Don’t make me repeat myself, Evangeline I have somewhere to be. Get out of the car.” “Are you really abandoning me on the side of the road to find Margaret?” His jaw clenched. “I didn’t say anything about Margaret. Now, move before I throw you out.” “You can’t do this. I’m not properly dressed-” He didn’t listen to me. He reached around me, opening the car door, and all but shoved me out. I barely managed to land on my feet, but Alex didn’t seem to care about that because he slammed the door shut behind him, his attention focusing on the driver. He sped off, leaving me standing there in the middle of the snow with nothing but my bag in my hands. I was shivering, my leggings did nothing to protect me from the cold, and my sneakers were not built for the ankle deep snow. Still, I had no choice but to start moving. The road was a little deserted, and there was little possibility of me finding a car at this time of the night. I made it to a tree, and stripped. Once I was naked, I shifted into my wolf, feeling the cool breeze against my fur. I shivered against the cold, and with my clothes in my mouth, I began the long walk home. Rage filled me as I trudged home. Alex had constantly disrespected me for our entire marriage, but this… it took the cake. He’d abandoned me without a care in the world because she was on a date. It wasn’t like she was in any danger. I wasn’t sure how many hours I spent walking, but by the time I saw the house in the distance, I was exhausted. My fur was wet, and I was freezing. I shifted back and pulled my clothes on before completing the last few steps to the house. The driveway was empty, and I scoffed. Of course he wasn’t home. He’d probably gone to see Margaret and never returned. I was greeted with laughter as I walked into the house, but it immediately ceased as I shut the door behind me. “And where have you been?” a cold voice drawled. I looked up to find MY grandmother standing by the furnace, her hands crossed over her chest. Her lips were pulled down into a frown and she assessed me like I was dirt under her shoes. I remembered a time when those eyes looked at me with love. She didn’t give me a chance to respond to her question before she continued. “This is why I didn’t want you working. See the time you returns. Who knows if you were with another man? You bring shame to this family.” I tried to defend myself, tried to explain that it wasn’t by choice. “Don’t speak,” grandma cut me off with a firm hand. “Since you like it outside so much, maybe you should stay there.” I turned back to face her. “I don’t understand.” “Go back outside, Evangeline.” She said, her voice firm and cold. “That is your punishment for returning so late. Perhaps next time you will respect the sanctity of your marriage and not return at almost midnight.” I waited for her to say it was a morbid joke, but she never did. She just smirked to herself, her hands crossed over her chest as she waited for me to oblige. “You can’t be serious,” I said finally. “It’s freezing out there.” I barely saw her hand move. I managed to duck in time as a glass cup shattered against the wall where my head had been. “Move, Evangeline, now!” she screamed. “Go kneel in the snow! It is what you deserve!”
