CHAPTER 2 YES, I'LL MARRY YOU. Emerald sat and wailed at the mahoosive gate that used to be her home. “Dennis, please! Just give me a second chance, and I'll make things right! I'll do anything you want!” She cried loudly and kept banging at the gate, but no one showed up to let her in. Instead, all she got was loud echoes of laughter from Dennis and Sylvia, while her mother-in-law made fun of how foolish she has always been to believe that Dennis's love for her was true. Her heart throbbed when she thought of how she sacrificed all she had to build Dennis into the kind of man her parents would accept, a billionaire and a CEO. Now, she has lost everything! After wailing for hours, Emerald realized it was 2:00 am already. She got to her feet and started walking down the lonely and quiet street. She walked for hours without a destination until she saw a pharmacy that was still open and decided to stop by to get some sleeping pills. Yes, all she wants is to take an overdose of any sleeping pills she can lay her hands on, then she'll sleep and never wake up again. She needed to do away with the annoying thought of how she had spent over a hundred thousand dollars to give Dennis a surprise on their third anniversary. “Your bill is $50, ma'am,” the cashier said, expecting her to offer cash or a credit card. Instantly, Emerald realized that she had nothing on her; Dennis never allowed her to leave with a pen, not even her purse that contained her credit card and some little cash. “I...I...I,” Emerald stammered, her feet rooted to the ground. She struggled to explain, but no word was forthcoming from her lips. “Ma’am, I said your bill is $50. Where is the money?” The cashier asked impatiently, but all that Emerald could offer was tear-filled eyes and a sympathetic look. “Security! Throw this woman out of this place!” she yelled. The manager who had been watching everything on the cameras stormed out and instructed, “The next time any of you attend to a mad person like this, just get ready to be fired.” Emerald wept as the security dragged her out like some piece of trash. Looking down at herself, she sees no reason to blame them because she actually looks more like a mad person; she was wearing a short blue gown that had been torn as a result of struggling with Laura. “You have to take that cloth off your body as well, you leech! I remember when my son bought it for you with his money!” Laura claimed. She aimlessly continued her journey of no destination, when suddenly, she heard heavy footsteps marching closer. Afraid, she turned and caught sight of two roughly dressed men leering at her. “Hey, look. This chick will taste fresh; what do you think?” “Yes, why don't we give it a trial shot?” the two men whispered. Emerald's heart raced; even though she was weak, she still made an attempt to run, but her strength failed her. “Come on, b***h! Why are you even running? Huh, aren't you dressed like this because you need a man? Why are you pretending?” “Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, we heard skinny girls like you know different styles to offer, right?” They continued as they pinned her to the ground by force after seizing the only good thing on her, the Rolex watch worth $32,000. “Please, don't hurt me! I'm not a slut!Help! Somebody, please help me!” Emerald screamed for mercy as she struggled with tears in her eyes. “Hey man, grab the watch and let's go! One of the men shouted, and they took to their heels as they saw a bright flash of light followed by the honking of several vehicles approaching. Instead of speeding past, the fleet of Escalades pulled up in front of Emerald. A man with an expensive bearing stepped down from the second vehicle and opened the passenger door. Out came a tall and well-built man. Even in the dark, his shiny grey eyes and curly dark hair were evidence of his good looks, which was enough to pull anyone in at first sight. “Hey, are you hurt?” He asked, squatting and smiling down at her. Emerald threw a conspicuous look at him, her expression laced with confusion as her body trembled. “You need to leave this place. Please, follow me,” he said with concern. “Please, who are you?” She asked in a frenzy. “I’m Adrian Lincoln,” he replied wittily.“You…. mean, you're Mr. Lincoln? Emerald stammered. “Yes, I am, and you are?” He asked casually.Emerald was stunned at his identity and jolted out of her thoughts when he asked a second time. “Oh, sorry, sir. I'm Emerald. The freshly divorced wife of Dennis Spencer,” she stammered. At that moment, the memories of Dennis's major clients flitted into her head. She remembered how Dennis had always spoken gracefully of Adrian Lincoln's immense contribution to the growth of his company. “Thank God you just said the truth, because I know everything about you already. I know that Dennis never loved you; rather, he was only using you to get what he wanted and settle down with Sylvia. Haven't you ever wondered why he travels to California quarterly?” Adrian's words struck Emerald's heart like a sharp sword. “Oh, I'm finished!” She cried inwardly.Dennis didn't keep his cheating life an exclusive secret; it was just that she was too blind to notice. She chuckled bitterly, a surge of hatred and anger coursing through her blood as she remembered the multiple times he had lied to her about how much he hated Sylvia.Reluctantly, Emerald followed him into the car.“Hey, check your w******p and attend to the message with immediate effect,” Adrian instructed as soon as the person on the other end of the phone picked up. Immediately, they pulled up to a large building near the expressway. In less than ten minutes, she saw a white Toyota Corolla approach, and a man stepped out and went straight into the large building. Soon, she saw the man coming towards their car with a shopping bag that looked somehow full. “Sir, these ones are really good, I hope she likes them,” the man said as he handed over the bag to Mr. Adrian. Emerald raised a brow. “So Mr. Adrian is married?” she thought to herself. “Hey,” she felt a tap on her lap, jolting her out of her thoughts. “This is for you. I just thought you'd need something to wear for the meantime, so I sent him your pictures,” Adrian said while he handed over the bag to her. Tears of joy streamed down her face. She never expected this kindness from him. “We're home now,” Adrian said as they drove to a large building with a tall gate.Immediately, two men from the other car stepped forward and opened the door for them before Adrian offered his hands to walk her in. “Oh, wow! Look who just made me stay awake till this time!” “Now, I see the reason why my son is always smiling lately. Welcome to your home my beautiful daughter in-law!” The joyful screams of an old man seated on the couch startled Emerald. Emerald's face got flushed with confusion about everything, but her good acting skills made it possible for her to mask her confusion with an outrageous smile. “Yes, father. That's why our wedding has been set for next week. I can't afford to lose her to anyone!” Adrian remarked while looking at her obliquely. “Well, finally I can sleep now and leave you two to start enjoying your honeymoon. I can't wait to see my grandchildren!” The old man said casually and waded off to his room. Emerald turned and glared at Adrian. Before she could say anything, Mr. Adrian was already on his knees with a diamond ring, staring directly into her eyes, “Please, do me the favor of being my wife, Emerald.” Emerald squinted and remained silent. She wondered if it was a coincidence that Dennis's top client was proposing marriage to her immediately after divorce. “Please, don't say no, Emerald. Let's get straight to business. I'm turning 35 by next month, and my father has made it clear that unless I marry before then, he's going to give all his possessions to my cousin. I know you need surgery as well as revenge on Dennis and Sylvia. So I'm proposing a contract of one year, then we divorce after we both get what we want,” he added. Emerald was puzzled and stood speechless. “And as your compensation for now, I'll give you 30 million dollars and make you the president of the Globex corporation from today,” he added. She raised her head, and tears flushed her face as she slowly gawked at Adrian. A cold smile formed on her lips. She huffed and wiped her tears. At that moment, Dennis’s and Sylvia’s disgusting faces flitted into her memory. She remembered how Dennis betrayed her love without any hint of remorse. “Yes, I'll marry you, Adrian,” she replied and added, “but I have my condition.” Adrian stood up, leaned his back on the wall, and said, “I'm all ears.” “I want you to turn Dennis and his family into street beggars. I mean, make sure you destroy everything he ever had and leave him with no penny,” Emerald said with a determined bitterness. “If that is all, consider it done!” He said with an assuring tone.
