Wyn seemed surprised with the raise of an eyebrow before slumping his shoulders, looking dejected.
"Is it...bad?"
"Well not exactly,"
Braelynn sighed softly while rubbing her hands together, for as long as she could remember the conversation that she had prepared years before had never had a single doubt.
Yet, now she felt herself hesitating. Being overly cautious not to intentionally harm Wyn,
"I just want us to go over...everything. I mean there's so much to sort out now, there are certain things I'd like us to discuss that are important."
He lifted his face and curiously gazed at her.
"Okay, where do we start?"
They started a ping-pong-like conversation.
"Where do we live?"
"We could take turns living in each other's place although I doubt you'd be comfortable with Claw."
"I would prefer to stay here, would you be against living in Butterfly?"
"Not at all, it would be lovely too."
"What are your thoughts on marriage?"
"Oh way too early, I want at least a few years before any of that."
"Good! I mean- I was nervous you'd be like, marry me now! Haha..."
"I'd like to take it slow, always knew that's what I'd tell my soulmate."
"Same!"
They paused for a moment before Brae rubbed the back of her neck, smiling.
"What are your thoughts on working? I know a lot of Marked males prefer the woman to stay at home and raise kids but—"
"Oh, gods no! Honestly, I'd be much happier to be a stay-at-home guy. My education...doesn't give me the best opportunities, if you know what I mean."
Braelynn agreed silently as Wyn turned his face away almost shamefully, it was no secret that Claw was the worst off compared to all the other Gates. Whatever education he received Brae knew it was less than he could admit, she didn't mind though.
I'll teach him later...
It was only a small thing she could think of but compared to nothing it was the best she could offer, in the meantime.
"And lastly, I think, kids...it's-it's just too early for that you know? So when we do...spend time together like that, in the future cause I'm not doing anything anytime soon, we must have precautions. Non-negotiable."
There was a burning blush across Wyn's cheeks as Brae was implying, he nodded quickly and cleared his throat.
"I agree completely."
After a moment the awkward air started to ease as they chuckled at each other, Brae glancing at the glowing mark on Wyn's shoulder.
Her face must've betrayed her because he whispered,
"You can ask you know? About my mum...I noticed your reaction when you saw she didn't have a mark on her shoulders or arms."
"Was it that obvious...?"
His lip lifted for a second.
"Very. In Claw so many people are Unmarked so we usually have the same reaction to seeing anyone Marked in Claw, very rare though."
"Well...why is she Unmarked? She seems so kind and sweet, Claw is so..."
"Unlike her? Rough and only for the daring?"
Wyn watched her while smiling at his own questions, continuing after her laughter.
"My mother was born in Claw and the likelihood of finding a soulmate when born in Claw is lower than average, my mum still had hope and after a long time, her mark never appeared. But she met another guy from Dragonfly who also never got his mark, he was visiting a relative in Claw at the time who used to go to school with my mum and be her best friend."
Braelynn leaned intensively, curiously at her Soulmates words. Imagining it in her mind like a play,
"They met through my mum's best friend and began to hang out, they talked and apparently he was as shy as a duckling. But he was very smart, he even taught my mum some things from his school..."
"I don't know exactly what happened because my mum always stops talking and then skips ahead but they ended up dating after a year and eventually I was born, I don't remember pretty much anything about my dad except his hands. They were big, always smelt like firewood..."
Wyn took a moment while Braelynn watched sympathetically, asking hesitantly.
"Your dad...?"
"He died when I was two."
Braelynn felt the mood go sour and a feeling in her stomach like a needle being dropped grow, stumbling across her words.
"I-I'm so s-sorry."
Instead of whatever sadness she had been prepared for Braelynn saw him smile warmly at her,
"It's okay, what about your parents?"
