ELENA The folder contained forty-three pages. I read all of them. It took an hour and twenty minutes because some of it required reading twice. Some of it required sitting with the page in my hand for a moment before I could move to the next one. Chloe had been meticulous. Two years of intimate access to Liam's life had produced documentation that Marcus Hale's investigation could corroborate but never have generated independently. Things that existed only in private spaces, in conversations she had been present for, in a study she had walked through enough times to know which drawer he thought was private. The second was phone records. It's not the numbers themselves but a handwritten list Liam kept. There were contacts and codes and the kind of analog record a careful man kept
