ELENA
Two sets of footsteps on the stairs.
Nicholas first.
Then Liam was behind him wearing a dark coat. His warm face with the energy of a man who had decided how this was going to go before he walked in.
"Elena." His voice was warm. "How are you?"
I didn't smile. "Why are you here, Liam?"
He ignored the question and moved through the space like he belonged.
Nicholas stood beside the door and said nothing. He watched Liam with his every move, not trusting him in anything.
Liam stopped near the back wall.
"I've been meaning to visit you," he said. "I was always busy." He turned and looked at me. "I regret that now."
"Do you," I said.
"I do." His voice was sincere.
I didn't believe him.
"You did really well here, Elena. I didn't appreciate it enough when I had the chance."
