ELENA All right. Two words. I had given him an instruction and he had accepted it and the room was very quiet around us and the moonlight came through the window seat and neither of us moved for a moment. Then he stepped toward me. Not rushed. Not the stumbling urgency of something that had been held back too long and finally broke through. Just deliberate. The way Nicholas did everything. Like he had already decided and was simply closing the distance. He took my face in both hands. He looked at me for one moment long enough that I understood he was asking without pushing, giving me the space to step back if I wanted it. I didn't step back. "Nicholas," I said. He kissed me.
