Chapter 5It took another few days before the human and Monk engineers fixed the engine enough to turn it back on at full blast. When they did, the lights got brighter, the air smelled better, and, most importantly, the ship began moving faster than the speed of light again.
No one knew why the fuel cell exploded, but the engineers were attributing it to a random power surge or a faulty valve. They understood that their job came with a reasonable level of danger, and while everyone mourned the dead, the engineers got right back to work.
Jack took a couple days off to rest. No one blamed him. He was more than helpful in fixing the engine room, and the poor guy needed some sleep. He also spent extra time with Henri and Cillian. The little family went to the growing floor and walked around.
