CHAPTER 8
DEAD OF DEEDS
JUDE'S POV.
Her face stayed frozen, her eyes fixed on my hand but she showed no real fear.
She was daring me to cut her open.
I leaned forward then slowly bent over. Her heartbeat thumping. She was trembling but she still acted tough.
“Are you really going to cut me open?” She asked, her voice trembling.
I raised the knife, my eyes fixed on her cleavage. Her gaze on my face intensified.
I wanted to know how long she would hold on.
Her breath became frantical.
She closed her eyes.
She was really a tough one. I threw the knife to the floor. She opened her eyes.
Her face was covered in visible sweats.
She looked at me with the eyes asking “Why did you stop?”
“Is something on there?” She asked.
Was she really clueless or the scar wasn't it?
I stared hard at her face. She smiled and lean forward our faces inch apart
“You won't cut me open. Why not?” She was teasing me?
I picked her forehead and she flinched.
“I won't cut you now. I will do it when you let me and beg me” I said, distancing myself from her.
She went back to the seat to continue her work.
She wasn't just sketching, she was making analysis impossible.
I roughed her hair and went back to sleep on the couch.
I called my assistant in the dead of the night.
“Did you install the camera? Link it to my device”
“Yes sir” he answered.
I watched Gracias’s face turn pale.
Then it twitched.
She stayed there hours doing what I didn't know.
Watching her from that end, she looked delicate, the one that makes one want to protect her.
I shook my head. No silly thoughts must be entertained.
She fell on the table. I rushed over to her.
She was burning up. “Gracias!” I called but she wasn't conscious.
I scooped her into my arms and carried her to the bed.
She grabbed my hand, her voice faint, “Why are….” her voice was fading.
I frowned. Beside her bedside was a fever reducer. She often has a fever.
I had read her medical report but found nothing wrong with her.
Then I became certain she had the device merged with her body.
How cruel could they be to have done that to a small child.
I sat by her bedside all through the bed, I didn't just need the code, I needed her.
I stared at her alluring face which was already pale.
I couldn't take my eyes off her.
She wasn't just anyone. She was Gracias, the key to my survival.
If she died, it would be good but what about me?
Won't they be another batch of us? My thoughts ran wild than they ever did.
For a moment I didn't want to take her away but it was a vision impossible. A most done deal. If I don't, another would.
Better to make it a clear one than a disastrous one.
She finally opened her eyes.
Her eyes were weak but her brow frowned.
She wanted to ask something but she didn't.
I know the question but the answer didn't exist. Anything would be an excuse.
I excused myself and went out.
Watching the little movement in the small building. My jaw clinched.
They were really getting impatient.
I didn't know how long I stood there but hours passed.
“I am off to school” her voice jolted me from my trance.
I watched her back disappear into the distance.
I know she sensed it but she behaved like she didn't care. An unseen eyes were watching her and a protective hand was already cast above her head.
She was normal, how good would it have been if she wasn't what was needed.
There at the alley, he appeared. Just before her, his hand stretched towards her.
My heart dropped.
I took off, by then he was already gone.
I grabbed her immediately, my breath frantic.
She looked up to meet my cold gaze. A soft smile spread across her face.
“Jude. He gave me a paper” she said, seeming not to care.
I took it from her hand and watched her join her other classmates.
My fit clinched as I read through the blood stained paper. “DEAD OF DEEDS”
