Chapter 4: Internal Conflict

911 Words
Kaleb led Ruby away from the café, his steps steady and deliberate, despite the storm brewing inside him. The night air bit cold, but Ruby barely noticed—her thoughts tangled between relief and confusion. His grip on her hand was firm, protective, yet his silence weighed heavier than any words. He brought her to a quiet, dimly lit apartment just a few blocks away. The place was stark, elegant—no unnecessary warmth, like Kaleb himself. Without a word, he gestured for her to sit as he fetched a small first aid kit from a drawer. Ruby’s cheek throbbed where the Don had struck her, the sting of the memory still fresh. As Kaleb cleaned the wound, his face remained unreadable, eyes sharp and cold. But inside, a war raged—a war he refused to lose. This isn’t supposed to happen. I’m not supposed to care. He was the Mafia King—the merciless killer, ruthless and feared. Emotions were weaknesses, especially for a woman. The image of his mother, cold and distant, the betrayal of his father’s mistress, the blood spilled when he was twelve—all rushed back like a dark tide. He had sworn never to let anyone in. Never to feel anything that could tear him apart. Yet here he was, gently tending to Ruby, the girl who had nothing but still fought every day. Kaleb gritted his teeth. His heart thudded painfully against his ribs, an alien sensation he tried desperately to ignore. She’s just a distraction. She’s not meant for this world. He looked at her swollen cheek and then into her tired eyes—eyes that didn’t ask for pity, only for a little kindness. And suddenly, the suffocating weight of responsibility crushed him. Kaleb stood abruptly, startling Ruby. “I shouldn’t—” he began, voice rough, stripped of his usual control. Ruby reached out, but he held up a hand, cutting her off. “This… this isn’t right. You don’t need me.” Her eyes widened. “What are you saying—” “No.” He shook his head, jaw tight. “I’m not built for this. For anyone.” She watched helplessly as he grabbed his coat, the distance between them stretching like a chasm. Kaleb’s eyes flickered once, betraying the storm inside. “I’m not the man who should care. Not for a girl like you.” Without another word, he slipped out into the night, leaving Ruby alone in the cold silence. Her heart ached—not just from the sting on her cheek, but from the sudden emptiness his departure left behind. Outside, Kaleb’s breath hitched as he paused on the street. He stared into the darkness, the weight of his own walls pressing tighter. I shouldn’t want to go back. But I will. Because she’s already inside me. Kaleb’s footsteps echoed in the empty street as he tried to outrun the storm inside him, but no matter how fast he walked, his thoughts chased him relentlessly. Why does she haunt me? he wondered, anger flashing like lightning. I don’t know her. She’s a stranger. Yet... His mind replayed the image of Ruby’s swollen cheek, the fragile way she had tried to hold herself together despite the rough hands of the Don’s men. That vulnerability, mixed with her quiet strength—it stirred something deep within him. Something he had buried long ago. I’m not made for this. I’m not supposed to feel. But every step away felt heavier, as if invisible chains pulled him back. --- Back inside the apartment, Ruby sat quietly, her fingers tracing the faint sting on her cheek. She barely knew this man—this ruthless kingpin who had rescued her only to leave like a ghost. His coldness was as confusing as his sudden kindness. Who is he? she wondered, heart thudding unevenly. Why does he act like he’s both protector and stranger Her mind raced with questions. The way he looked at her—not with tenderness exactly, but something sharp and guarded. It made her feel exposed, yet oddly seen. She swallowed the lump in her throat, wishing she could understand the man behind those cold eyes. --- Kaleb stopped at the corner, the city’s noise dimming around him. His chest tightened with memories—his mother’s betrayal, the blood he spilled as a boy, the loneliness that shaped him into a monster. I’m not the man who should care. But his heart throbbed painfully, betraying his every word. He pulled his coat tighter and swallowed hard. “I should leave this behind,” he muttered, voice rough with bitterness. Yet as he glanced back toward the apartment, a part of him whispered the truth he refused to admit. She’s already a part of me. Whether I want it or not. --- Ruby wiped a tear she didn’t realize had fallen. “Why did he leave?” she whispered to the empty room. The strange pull she felt wasn’t just fear or confusion—it was something deeper, like the start of a story neither of them could control. She didn’t know him, and maybe she never would. But somehow, she knew this night was just the beginning. --- Kaleb disappeared into the shadows, battling the ache of a connection he couldn’t explain. Meanwhile Ruby was left hanging in the dark filled with mixed emotions as she found her way home. That night was longer than usual.
