Chapter 7: Laying low

Laura’s POV "Or maybe at work? I don't know," he added before noticing that there were broken glasses all over the floor. He got up surprised and asked, "What happened here? Are you okay?" "Y...yeah, I....I'm okay," I stammered. I hadn't expected him to make sure statement all of a sudden. If he was suspecting someone in the house is a traitor that means I have to be very careful. I needed to get the cameras out of his room before he notices and suspects that I am the traitor. He helped me clear the broken glass pieces and helped dispose them. I said a quiet thank you to him. "I'll just take my leave," I said, turning to leave the room. "Don't you want to keep me company anymore?" He asked. "I'd love to but I just remembered that I have some chores to finish up," I said and walked towards the door. "Hold on," he said with a deep voice and I froze immediately. Had he already suspected me or what? I felt my heart racing very fast in my chest. "Turn around," he added. I sucked in my breath as I slowly turned around to face him. He was now standing directly behind me and I shook in fear at the close proximity, still holding my breath. "Give me the wine. I'll need it to think," he said and a smile appeared in his face. I exhaled slowly, trying not to make him suspect anything. Putting on a smile on my face, I handed him the bottle of wine, our fingers slightly brushing against each other. He looked me straight in the eyes as if looking for something then said, "Thank you." "Don’t mention it,” I said turning to leave. I approached the door, opened it and left the room. It wasn’t until I got out that I sighed in relief. That was close. I thought Anderson had found out my secret somehow but thankfully, he hadn't yet. I ran back to my bedroom, took my phone and made a call to dad. "How's my favorite daughter today? I'm sure she's getting ready to send me my video?" Dad said as soon as he answered the call. "Dad, I think I need to keep a low profile," I said. I wasn’t seeing him physically but I could tell he was not pleased with my announcement. "And why is that? Have you finally decided that you want to back out? Aren't you scared about being exposed?" He asked. I felt angry that my father was still threatening me despite being his daughter. I ignored what he said and answered his first question. "Anderson is beginning to suspect that there is a traitor in the house. If I do not lay low now, I would eventually get caught so I advice that you allow me lay low until everything cools off," I said. There was a brief moment of silence as if he was trying to think. What could he possibly be thinking about? I wondered. "Fine. But make sure that as soon as everything cools off, you carry on with your mission," he said. I told him I would before ending the call. I dropped my phone in the bedside table as my mind went back to what happened at Anderson’s room. I felt my heart starting to race. What if he knew I was the traitor and he was just playing games? I thought. I don’t think he knows but still I had to tread very carefully. I was cleaning the living area one day when I heard the doorbell ring. Although it wasn’t my job but the person to do it fell ill so I stood in for her. I went to open quickly as the doorbell rang repeatedly. Standing at the door was a very pretty, rich looking lady. “Hi?” I said hoping she explains who she is or what she wanted. "Get out of my way" She said very rudely. Whom does she think she's talking to? I wondered. "And who are you?" I asked her, trying to keep my composure. "I should be asking you that? Who the hell are you to stop me from coming into my boyfriend's house?" She a said angrily. Boyfriend??? Was she talking about Anderson or someone else? I wondered. Before I could speak again, Violet, one of the maids in the house, approached us and said, "Miss Alison, you're here. Welcome. Please come in." Violet gave me an eye signal to leave the doorway and I did exactly that, waiting for her to explain what was going on because it seemed she knew who this strange lady was. The lady pushed past me and walked into the house. "Thank you Vee. Who is this lady who was trying to stop me from coming in?" The lady said eyeing me. "This is Laura, Miss Alison. She is the new maid employed by Mr. Smith. She doesn't know who you are. I apologize for her mistake," Violet apologized. "Oh, I see," the Alison lady said, looking me from head to toe. Then turning back to face Violet, she said, "Please help me with my stuff." Violet nodded as she took Alison's things and began to walk away. Alison stayed a few seconds longer and only walked away after giving one last nasty look. As I watched her walk away, I wondered how long she was going to stay for. She seemed like she'd give me a lot of problem while being here. I just had to be careful. Later that evening, when Anderson got back from work, she told him what happened. Anderson called me to explain who she was. He wasn't angry or anything like that. I guess Alison was angry that he did not tell at me because she looked even more upset with the way he spoke to me gently. I smirked as I watched the anger on her face.
