Laura’s POV
Days passed since Alison came to the house. She had been getting on my nerves, probably hoping that I would react but I managed to keep my cool. She would purposely mispronounce my name just to get a reaction but I’ll ignore it.
Sometimes she’d make comments like “that maid dress suits you perfectly” or “it makes you look like a real maid”. These comments always got to my nerves but I always managed to calm myself down so that I don’t react rashly in a way that would make Anderson fire me.
One day, I was cleaning Anderson’s room after he had left for work and Alison was in the room, pressing her phone. Suddenly, I heard her voice,
“What’s your name again?” she said.
I pretended like I did not hear her and kept cleaning.
“HEY MAID, I’M TALKING TO YOU,” she yelled.
I stopped what I was doing, feeling really upset. I turned to look at her and saw there was a smirk on my face. She probably realized that she had gotten to me. I felt like punching her straight in the face but I wasn’t going to give her the privilege of getting to make me angry to achieve her goals. I put on a fake smile on her face which made the smirk on her face disappear immediately.
“My name is Laura and not Maid,” I replied before going back to my work.
There was a brief silence before she spoke again.
“Laura or whatever your name is…”
Now I knew she was just trying to get me upset on purpose but I still kept my calm. Then she continued after seeing that I did not react.
“What’s going on between you and my baby?” she asked.
I stopped immediately, wondering what she meant. I slowly turned to look at her and said,
“Excuse me, Miss Alison.”
“I know you heard what I said clearly, Lauren,” she said.
“My name’s Laura and yes, I may have heard you but I don’t understand,” I said with gritted teeth.
“Okay Lola, I’ll ask you this question just one more time and you better listen carefully,” she said sitting before she continued.
“What is going on between you and Anderson? What’s the relationship between you both?” she asked me.
I scoffed and said,
“Well, in case you haven’t noticed, I work for him as his personal housekeeper. I’m sure Violet told you that the first day we met and I’m sure Mr. Anderson has also explained who I am to you.”
I was just about to return to my cleaning duties when she stopped me saying,
“That is not how it looks to me.”
“How then does it look to you?” I asked smugly.
“It looks like there’s something more going on between you two. He speaks highly of you. He doesn’t do that with the rest of his staff even those that were here before you. Are you sleeping with my boyfriend?” she asked.
“if you need an answer to that question, Miss Alison, I think the best person to speak to would be Mr. Smith. You complain that he speaks so highly of me. Well, that could only mean one thing: that I am damn good at my job. I aim to please my employers but if you think that there are still other things going on, then ask him.”
I picked up my cleaning items and approached the door to leave the room but then she stopped me right in my tracks with next statement she made.
“I will make sure you leave this house. Trust me,” she said.
I looked over my shoulder to reply her and said,
“I’ll wait for that to happen, Alison.”
After saying that, I opened the door and walked out of the room. Standing outside the door, I realized I had to be really careful. Alison doesn’t look like someone who simply speaks without actions. She definitely was going to try to sabotage my work here. I must make sure she doesn’t implicate me and make me get fired. I hadn’t completed my job here yet so I can’t leave just yet. Days passed after that incident but nothing happened. I began to think that maybe Allison was all bark and no bite. But even if she was, I won’t relax back.
One morning while waiting for Anderson to leave for work before going to clean his room as usual, I heard a knock on my door. Violet walked in and said,
“Laura, Mr. Smith has asked to see you.”
With a confused expression etched on my face, I told her that I would go to see him. As I left my room, I wondered what Anderson would want to see me for before leaving for work. Regardless of that, I made my way to his room and knocked on the door.
“Good morning, Mr. Smith,” I greeted as I walked in.
“Good morning, Laura. Please, I need to ask: the last time you cleaned my room which was yesterday, did you move my cologne and wristwatch from the usual place?” he asked.
I furrowed in confusion as I replied,
“No, Mr. Smith. I did not move anything. I only raise them up and cleaned the table before replacing them back in their position.”
“But I cannot find either my cologne or my wristwatch,” Anderson said.
Before I could reply, Alison spoke up,
“I told you times without number, baby, that this maid of yours is incompetent. I mean, who moves stuff from one place and doesn’t return them back there after cleaning. Or maybe she stole them, babe.”
A smirk appeared on her face as I turned to look at her. It was at the point I realized that Alison was behind this stunt. I felt my blood boil because I hadn’t seen this coming. I turned to Mr. Smith and said,
“I’ll help look for it.”
“Thank you,” he said.
