Chapter 23
There was barely room for the four of us in the elevator car. I suspected that, when the Overseer needed to use the screen to address the Colony at large, he or she usually traveled the final leg of the journey alone. There were no buttons on the inside of the elevator, nothing to direct it where we wanted it to go, but apparently it only had one destination; the moment the doors shut behind us, the elevator began to ascend.
“The Monitor took you all up in this?” I asked Lyra.
“I didn’t say he took us up,” Lyra corrected with a nervous glance around. “I said he showed it to us. We didn’t actually get inside it.”
Brin bit her lower lip. “So you don’t know what this Monitor room looks like?”
Lyra gave her a tight smile. “It’s all new to me, too.”
