The temptation to remain isolated in the room until morning dawned was great, but in the end, I realized I couldn’t cower from the Overseer’s thinly veiled threats any more. How could I ask the rest of the Colony to stand up beside me against him if I wasn’t ready to face him all by myself?
When I headed for the open elevator, Lyra tried to pull me back. “We’re better off here for now—”
“I’m through being afraid,” I told her. Of the Overseer, yes, but also of everything I didn’t know about. Anything new, or different. If I wanted to live free, I had to fight to stay free. I shrugged her hand off my shoulder and strode toward the elevator.
