Sounds drifted to us from the lit part of the tunnel. When I heard the clatter of tools and faint laughter, I figured the shift was ending and dared another peek. Sure enough, the workers had left the train and were heading for a gap in the wall. I assumed there were stairs leading up to the Junction, maybe even a grate with turnstiles, but since it was on the same side of the tunnel as we were, I couldn’t see for certain.
