Chapter 15 Tin followed the subway rails down farther than I had ever ventured before—past the “bathroom” we used, past the next platform beyond that, through tunnels I suspected few bothered to journey into most of the time. In some of the tunnels, lights had been broken out, and the way forward was lit sporadically. I wondered if it hadn’t been done on purpose, to save electricity. There was enough light to see by—and, more than once, I spotted the shadowy figure of a rat racing alongside us, the creature itself just out of sight. At times the track twisted and turned, and the cycle kept up with the switches easily enough.
