Kayla's POV
The next day, during break, Chloe and I were on our way to sit under the tree near the soccer field, where we usually sit to read a book when I spot Jake was deep in conversation with his teammates in their changing room.
He suddenly paused, his laughter fading away, when he finally caught sight of me. His eyes widened in disbelief, and for a moment the world around us faded away, as I also stood there gazing into his eyes.
"are you even listening to me" I heard Chloe said and tap me slightly on the shoulder. " Back to earth Kayla, Christ you're acting like a lost puppy"? She teased when she saw what has caught my attention.
Jake's friends noticed, too, and turned to see what has captivated him so completely. I felt my checks flushed as I felt their intense gaze on me. A mixture of surprise and admiration flicking in their eyes. I could hardly believe this, after all this years of walking around this school like a ghost, people now turn their heads, to take a proper look at me anytime I walked by.
During lunch break at the cafeteria, Chloe and I were on our table enjoy our meal, when Jake and his friends suddenly joined our table. I raised my eyebrows and looked at each one of them, with both shock, and disbelief on my face. Like they never spare me a glance, and now they want to eat together with me.
"Did you guys miss your way or something?" I heard Chloe asked them, with both surprise and shock written all over her face. All eyes at the cafeteria, is now turned to our table.
"is it a crime, to want to eat beside some pretty ladies? Jake flirted, staring intensely into my eyes.
"Can we be friends Kayla?, my name is James" One of Jake's friends proposed bringing his hand for a handshake.
"Ye..ah I guess " I replied, tying to sound nonchalant, but my voice trembled slightly. I could feel the heat rising in my face, when the rest of Jake's friends started introducing themselves.
After school, I was rushing home, to go help my mom with grocery shopping, when Sasha and her little minos stopped me. Sasha was the most popular girl in our school. She was known for her beauty and wild curls that danced in the wind. She has a close-knit group of friends and a reputation as the girl used to getting what she wanted. She has something I admire a lot, she's confident, glamorous but a fool.
"wow, look whom we found, Kayla the nerd. Ms perfecta. Nice new look! Too bad it's not really you," She said as she eyed me from heard to toe, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
"She's probably trying to get someone's attention" I heard one of her minos said. I crossed my hands in front of my chest, and just stood there watching them like they were comedians. This week has been one of my best weeks, and I don't want to spoil the vibe because of this britches.
"Just so you know nerd, you're ugly and changing your appearance won't change that fact. I see the way you were flirting with Jake earlier, at the cafeteria. Mind you girl, he's taken, so watch your steps".
She blabbered and walked passed me, followed by her little minos. I quietly walked home because I didn't want to cause any trouble today by dealing with this britches. But they can try this with me another day.
MAX'S POV.
I slammed my bedroom door, the sound echoing through the empty house. "New York? seriously?" I shouted at my parents, who stood in the hallway, their faces a mix of concern and disappointment.
"You're uprooting my life for a job? what about my friends? my life?.
My dad sighed, his brow furrowing. "it's a great opportunity Max. You'll make new friends, you'll love it here" " love it? I doubt it".
I muttered, flopping onto my bed. I stared at the ceiling, imagining my friends back in California, laughing and hanging out without me. I felt like a balloon that has been popped, deflated and lost. The house is so boring, I don't know how I'll survive New York without my friends here.
I decided to go on a tour around the city to kill boredom. After hours of non-stop driving around the city, I packed my car near a coffee shop in Manhattan. I made my order, and sat at a corner tying to drown my sorrow in a double shot of espresso. I was still sulking, when I heard a voice that cut through my thoughts like a knife.
"Excuse me, but I think you're sitting on my seat", I turned to see a girl with wild straight hair and bright blue hazel eyes glaring at me. she wore a pink crop top and shorts, with a white sneakers that somehow made her look charming and adorable, but with her tone and facial expression I doubt that.
"Your seat" I scoffed, crossing my arms "I don't see your name on it" she rolled her eyes, clearly unimpressed. " it's a coffee shop, not a throne room. Get yourself another seat". I opened my mouth to retort, but she had already plopped down on the chair across from me, her coffee cup in her hand. I'm not going anywhere, so you might as well deal with it. She said sarcastically.
