Max's POV. I glared at her, but there was something oddly captivating about her defiance. "What's your name?" I asked, half curious, and half annoyed. "No need for that now" she said, taking a sip of her coffee. " You're new here, aren't you?" " is it that obvious" I muttered, feeling my checks flush. "only to someone who is actually playing attention" she said, smirking. "You look like, you've just been dragged through a hedge backwards" "Thanks for the compliment" I replied, dryly and glared at her. "so what's your deal, you're clearly not a fan of the Big Apple" "Maybe I'm just not a fan of an annoying girls who invaded my personal space" I retort, trying to keep my annoyance in check. "Touchè" she said raising an eyebrow. " But you know, you could lighten up a bit. New York has a lot to offer, if you give yourself a chance. Like what? crowded subways and overpriced coffee " "Exactly!, and the best bagels you you'll ever taste". She replied, her eyes sparkling with mischief. " You just need to explore a little - I could show you around ". "Why would I want to spend time with you?" I asked genuinely perplexed. "Because I'm the only person, who's willing to tolerate your grumpy attitude " she shot back unfazed. " besides you might actually enjoy it". "Yeah right " I scoffed. "I'm not here to make friends, or discover hidden gems. I just want to survive high school without losing my sh*t ". "Good luck with that" she said, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "You'll need it, but you change your mind, I'm Kayla by the way" " Great, just what I needed, an overly cheerful stranger to ruin my day" I muttered. But I couldn't help, but notice the way her smile light up the room. "Nice to meet you, Mr. grumpy pants. I'll be around, if you need someone to help you find the silver lining". She said winking, before walking away. I spent the next few days avoiding that coffee shop, but somehow, I kept finding myself back there, each time, that annoying girt wasn't there. it's just like he has been sent purposely to annoy me that day. And afterwards, vanished into thin air. Kayla's POV. As I woke up on Monday morning, the sun stream through my window, casting a warm glow across the room. I could hardly contain my excitement for the week ahead. it was the start of a new week, and I had big plans. I'm no more the invincible nerd in my school, but now friends with the most popular boy and his friends. But as I brush my teeth, a nagging thought crept into my mind - the grumpy boy I met at the coffee shop last week, when I visited aunty Jean at her shop. Auntie Jean is my mother's elderly sister. That grumpy boy's scrowl has been so intense that, it almost overshadowed my favorite, delicious caramel macchiato I ordered. I shock my head, trying to dismiss the thought. After all, I had more things to focus on, Like my classes and my new found friends. "Kayla, are you ready" Chloe shouted from downstairs, her voice breaking through my thoughts". I quickly threw on my favorite denim jacket, and grabbed my backpack , eager to see what the day has in store for me. As we drove to school, Chloe's upbeat chatter, filled the car as we navigate the street. I glanced at her, her curly hair bouncing with every turn. "So what's the deal with that grumpy boy?" She asked breaking the comfortable silence. " You seemed to be really intrigued by him". You must be wondering how Chloe knows about Mr. grumpy pants. Well I went together with her to auntie Jean's coffee shop last Saturday, and I was unknowninly staring at the door throughout our stay there to see if I'll see Mr. grumpy again, and Chloe being Chloe noticed and asked whom I was waiting for. I had to tell her about Mr. grumpy. I rolled my eyes, trying to play it cool. " He was just... intense you know. I mean you frowns that much over relocating?. I chuckled, but deep down I knew he needed a friend. Chloe smirked, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Or maybe he's hot, and you got captivated by his looks". " Can you be serious for once, Chloe" I said, perplexed. But the idea lingered in my mind, but I brushed it off. As we pull into the school parking lot, my heart raced. I spotted Jake, leaning against the wall, his tousled hair catching the sunlight. He looked effortlessly cool, and my stomach fluttered. Just when I was about to wave, he caught my eyes and smiled. "Hey, Kayla! " Jake called out, waving me over. I felt my checks flushed. " Hey, Jake! " I replied, trying to sound casual, while my heart did somersault. I walked to my first class and sat down cheerfully, chatting with my friend Chloe. Few minutes later, Jake entered the class, and walked to my desk. "Kayla, mind if I sit beside you today? " he asked, with a smirk creeping onto his lips. I couldn't believe my ears, I was dancing with excitement in my head. Few minutes before the class started, we talked about our favorite exhibits, and for a moment, it felt like we were the only people in the room. I laughed at his perty jokes, and he'll give his killer smile, that I have grown to love, anytime I say something funny. Just as I thought I was making progress, I noticed Jake's gaze drifting towards Emily, the cheerleader of the basketball team, the moment she entered the class. My heart sank, I felt a wave of disappointment wash over me. someone I tried so much to gain his attention, is sitting right here with me, but his eyes are on another girl. Just then the chemistry teacher entered the class. The morning classes flew by in a blur of notes and laughter. But I couldn't shake off the feeling of Jake seating beside me, while glancing at another girl. I found myself glancing at the clock, counting down the minutes until break. When I could finally go out.
